4. Smith and Cohen (2011) wondered whether people preferred to read a story that used mainly simple sentences or more complex sentences. They had subjects read two stories (one that used mainly simple sentences and one that used mainly complex sentences) and choose which they liked more. They found that 21 people preferred the simple-sentence story and 29 preferred the complex-sentence story.
