Throughout each module and in several readings, the developmental and social impact of psychiatric diagnoses are highlighted. For example, psychiatric diagnoses often include the criteria for an individual’s symptoms to markedly interfere with one’s functioning, including functioning at work and in personal or family relationships. The readings have also explored etiological aspects of mental illness with regards to genetic predispositions and environmental stressors.
In the videos below Dr. van der Kolk, a seminal theorist, researcher, and practitioner in traumatology, shares his experience diagnosing, evaluating, and working with survivors of trauma. He speaks of the mind–body connection in terms of how persons exposed to trauma experience neurobiological changes and discusses how to identify symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder.
