Research Essay #3. The goal of this essay is to illustrate the contemporary resonance of Swift’s satire by making a creative connection between Book IV of Gulliver’s Travels and some area of personal interest or expertise. Choose a specific subject raised during Gulliver’s time among the Houyhnhnms and Yahoos, and then frame it as a research question: What does Book IV have to teach us about this subject? We will identify possible subjects during the course of our discussion.
The essay (first draft, notes from the peer review, and final draft) is due no later than Wednesday, May 9. The essay will be evaluated on your ability to articulate a clear and compelling thesis, and then to elaborate and illustrate your thesis across a series of body paragraphs that make reference to the text of Gulliver’s Travels as well as your critical and contextual research. The essay must include a Works Cited page in MLA format.
