· In what ways do they exaggerate the group?

· What aspects do you believe are true?

· Why do you believe they are true?

· What is your perspective of people who used those stereotypes?

Stereotypes, oppression and Systematic Racism towards Black in media

Research and identify 3 pieces of media that comment, portray, report about, depict, and/or symbolize black Americans negatively.

Examples: news article, cartoon, songs, artwork, movie. If your forms of media are “outside of the box” i.e. youtube video, please make sure I approve the forms of media before you commit.

Answer the following questions:

What is the media you have chosen? (a brief description/summary) Why? (submit the forms of media if possible)

Deconstruct your media choices. What is the implicit and explicit message about your identified group? Some questions you may want to explore:

What is being said about your identified group?

Is it positive or negative?

How are they being portrayed?

What are the;l stereotypes?

What is the impact and how does this portrayal impact your identified group? (think privilege and oppression)

Does this portrayal create obstacles to obtaining social services? If yes, what are the obstacles created or potentially created on a micro, mezzo, macro level.
