Choose one social theory discussed in either video or choose your own. Choose one that best represents how you view the world. Remember, theories are a
framework through which you
organize your thoughts. A theoretical framework will enable you to organize your thoughts and develop a clear understanding of your topic. Once you choose
a theory:
1. Describe the theory
2. Share why this theory appeals to you.
3. How does it help you understand the world
4. How can this theory cure a social problem or aid in social justice advocacy
Example:
If I choose Contact Theory, I will first define it. (One paragraph). Share why it appeals to me (two paragraphs minimum). Describe in detail how adopting the theory is a good thing. (One
paragraph minimum). What are Contact Theory’s benefits, for whom, and how does contact between different groups promote tolerance and acceptance? (Two paragraphs minimum).
Lastly, your conclusion paragraph will begin with, “I advocate this theory because it will aid in the understanding of…” (list and give examples).

Social Theory

It might surprise you to learn that sociologists do not have a single, unified theory of human society. In fact, they very often don’t agree with each other! Sociology has at least three major theoretical perspectives that act as lenses through which to view social life – and a lot smaller, more specific theories for various topics of sociological interest. As you learn about these theories, don’t feel compelled to choose between them; rather, think about how they each show us different things.

Pick a classical sociological theorist (but not philosophers we may discuss) and do an in-depth research paper on the ideas of that theorist. Do not discuss biographies, focus on their intellectual contributions to social theory.
The social theorist I chose would be George Herbert Mead. Focus on classical symbolic interactionism and his concept and ideas, not on his biography.
