Representation in film

What does it mean for there to be representation in film?

The Scully Effect: I Want to Believe in STEM

My stance : Representation on film means that a specific group of people are being highlighted and portrayed in a way that is controlled by the director. Representation can make people of that specific group in the audience feel seen and heard. However not all representation is good representation. If it is done poorly it can further perpetuate stereotypes and or negative connotations behind certain groups. Representation doesn’t stop with those in front of the camera either. It’s important to have it behind the scenes as well, having different perspectives and backgrounds can help with making portrayals more accurate in film. I believe that representation should be done correctly and if it is done lazily then it shouldn’t be there at all.
any other outside sources are welcomed as well.
