Cultural attitudes towards race, color, national origin, religion

How is your body impacted by dominate cultural attitudes towards race, color, national origin, religion, gender (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, disability, and other considerations not mentioned here?

To answer this question, you’ll be writing a narrative essay, similar to those we’ve read. As part of this narrative, you’ll discuss your personal history as it relates to the prompt while also trying to connect your experiences to at least three of our readings. This means, we’ll need to incorporate quotes/paraphrase from at least three of our sources in our analysis of how our bodies have been impacted by dominant cultural attitudes.

Be mindful that our analysis should strive to highlight more than just narrative similarities. That is, maybe we haven’t had gastric bypass like Roxane Gay, but that doesn’t mean our relationship with our respective bodies isn’t similar. And, more to the point, that doesn’t mean we can apply the lesson Gay learned from her experience to our own. So, when composing this essay, think about how we might apply the lessons, or morals, from the articles we’ve read to our own experiences.

Compose an essay of at least 1,000 words.
Include a thesis statement and topic sentences.
Integrate specific examples from three different readings from this unit are integrated via quotation or paraphrase. These are then analyzed, or explained, so that it is clear how the reading connects with your personal experience. (This is often completed by comparing your experiences to those of the authors you’re discussing.)

Once you have chosen one aspect of cultural diversity to study in-depth, prepare a Research Paper with the following components:

1- Summarize the pertinent historical, political, social, economic and cultural factors related to your chosen aspect of diversity.

2-Consider and summarize any relevant developmental theory models related to your chosen aspect of diversity.

3-In regard to your chosen aspect of diversity, identify and evaluate the relevant laws or programs that have either helped or restricted access to care and support.

4-Evaluate how your chosen aspect of diversity, in combination with two other aspects of diversity, can lead to increased needs or issues. For example, if someone is female, African American, and lesbian, will there be additional challenges? Select any combination of 3 aspects of diversity to discuss.

5-Describe at least two resources currently available in your area for someone needing special services related to your chosen aspect of diversity.

6-Explain how your personal characteristics will either complement or conflict with this diversity issue. Consider your own biases and prejudices or those of your family of origin.

7-Discuss relevant concerns, cautions, or insights necessary for you to be a culturally competent human service professional.
