Tourgee wrote the South “surrendered at Appomattox and the North has been
surrendering ever since.” Do you agree with that statement? Should we think of
Reconstruction as a defeat or retreat? And, if so, is the key cause the North’s surrender?
Each essay should be 4-5 paragraphs. You should bring in specific examples, and refer
to each of the four books (Foner, Dudden, Smith, Jones) at least once. (Foner, Dudden
and Jones can appear in either essay 1 or 2; Jones must appear in essay 1.)
