Navigating the Midlife Crisis: Intersections of Biology, Psychology, and Social Factors

A description of the characteristics/features of a midlife crisis, including the different experiences in terms of gender. Explain how biology intersects with psychology and social factors in this phenomenon, and provide an example. Then, explain how you as a social worker could help a person navigate a midlife crisis.

Psychology

  1. Explain how neurons communicate in the most detail you can. Hit all the critical points from neurotransmitters attaching and opening ion channels to what happens at the terminal button and everything in between. Include electric and chemical components of communication.
  2. Why is nature/nurture; genes/experience thinking inaccurate? Explain and
include examples and evidence to support your claims. Tell me everything you
    know about epigenetics.

Part 2 ( Chapters 9,10,15.1-15.6,15.14-15.20)

  1. A heroin addict goes on the show intervention and agrees to go to rehab. If after 4
months they are clean and sober, would you recommend that they move back to the
house they lived in before? Why would you recommend (Yes or No). Explain using
    the Opponent Process Theory.
  2. Describe in detail the development capabilities of a cell as it goes from totipotent
to unipotent. Using research discussing disorders, list why each of the
stages are special and how might they be used in the research?

Part 3 (Chapter 16,18) Plus 4 articles)

  1. Why did cerebral lateralization of function evolve? Summarize the theoretical
evolutionary perspectives in your own words. Is there any evidence to support the
theories? Explain the evidence at both the individual and population level and cite the article
  2. In your own words describe the neurogenic theory of depression and why SSRI’s
might work but might not be the best solution to the problem using the framework you read from the articles Specifically, give evidence for the neurogenic of depression, again from one of the articles. (towards the end)

Please turn your attention to the many issues that may be attached to insufficient sleep. Have you (or anyone you know) ever experienced significant periods of sleep deprivation because of simple insomnia, high levels of stress, or a side effect of medication? (you can think of other reasons, as well) What were the consequences of missing out on sleep?

Discussion Post Reaction:

1. What are the characteristics of integrative medicine?
2. Can you identify a time that you have integrated complementary or alternative techniques into your treatment?
3. What effect did mindfulness-based meditation have on the telomeres of participants described in the video?
4. As it is addressed in the video, research suggests that the way we bring ourselves fully into connection with those from whom we care is one of the most crucial factors supporting how people heal and how they respond to our therapeutic efforts.
a. As future health professionals, how do you think this would affect creative nonadherence?
b. And the patient-practitioner relationship?
5. How do you think culture plays a role in the way we perceive health and illness?
6. How do biopsychosocial factors influence the treatment we seek?

A man is attracted to his brother’s wife, but he acts especially cool toward her, ignoring her so much that his brother asks him why he’s being so cold, “We’re brothers and you’re treating my wife like she isn’t even part of the family!”

(1) Analyze this in terms of defense mechanisms. What’s going on? What’s this man’s conscious understanding of why he’s acting this way? What’s his unconscious reason?

(2) How might a cognitive therapy counselor like Aaron Beck guide this man in therapy? Is there some kind of cognitive distortion going on — maybe an unrealistic standard?

Imagine that you are an expert witness testifying in court regarding the accuracy of eyewitnesses. In this context, explain the misinformation effect and how it might lead an eyewitness to incorrectly recall the details of an event. Apply your response to an original example. Your response needs to demonstrate a thorough understanding of false memories and the factors that contribute to them. Use the brain and memory functions, and its ability to recall and recognize. Also explain the memory and traumatic events and eyewitness testimony.
