Project Management Process

Describe how you will track scope and scope changes

Strategic Planning:Case Study Overview:In conventional business and government megaprojects–such as hydroelectric dams, chemical-processing plants, or big-bang enterprise-resource-planning systems–the standard approach is to build something monolithic and customized. Such projects must be 100% complete before they can deliver benefits: Even when it’s 95% complete, a nuclear reactor is of no use. On the basis of 30 years of research and consulting on megaprojects, the author has found two factors that play a critical role in determining success or failure: replicable modularity in design and speed in iteration. The article examines those factors by looking at well-known megaprojects, both successful ones, and cautionary tales.Case Study Link

Project Management Process

You have been assigned as a project manager for a small construction company and have been assigned your first project. The client feels they have a basic grasp on their requirements but also feels that they will know more as the project progresses. Using your knowledge of life cycle models, identify two models that may work based on your knowledge of the project. The scope of the project is as follows:

Requirement 1: 3 bedrooms
Requirement 2: 2.5 bathrooms
Requirement 3: Pool
Requirement 4: 2 patios, one patio should be enclosed
Using your experience documenting scope, outline the problem/opportunity statement you are trying to solve for, 2-3 success criteria, and any assumptions, risks, or obstacles. Part 2Create a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) for the following scope:

Requirement 1: 3 bedrooms
Requirement 2: 2.5 bathrooms
Requirement 3: Pool
Requirement 4: 2 patios, one patio should be enclosed
Your WBS should be based upon your chosen Life Cycle Methodology and include any deliverables. Assignment Requirements:

Now that you’ve developed a list of resources, a budget, a list of tasks, and a timeline, it’s time to check in again with your customer(s). In this activity, imagine you’ve just finished up a Progress Review Meeting with your customer(s) where you discussed the current status of the project, project progress, and any troubleshooting that has occurred. Now, you need to write a follow-up email to go over what was discussed in the meeting. You will write a professional email to the customer(s) of your project, recapping the progress report you delivered in your meeting.

Your book talks about the “Scope Triangle” or the Iron Triangle.
Question 1: Your book addresses six areas that are part of the iron triangle –

Describe each of the areas included in the iron triangle
Of the six which areas do you feel are the most important and why?
Part 2Scope Creep – Discuss ways in which scope creep occurred on projects with which you have been associated. Was the project manager able to reverse scope creep? Is it possible to reverse scope creep and what is the impact? How do you identify scope creep?
