Nature Vs. Nurture

Until recently, the “nature vs. nurture” argument has dominated social work discussions of genetics, human behavior, and development.

For this week’s discussion:

Discuss why this argument is too simplistic and reductionist to reflect current knowledge.
Provide scholarly evidence to support your discussion incorporating ideas from 2 outside peer reviewed journal articles.
Remember to use this discussion to demonstrate that you read and understand this week’s material by relating to and integrating what you are learning with social work knowledge, practice, values, and ethics.

Nature vs. Nurture

There is an ongoing debate of the relative importance of Nature vs. Nurture in language development. B.F. Skinner started the investigation with behavioral learning theory. Noam Chomsky and others argue that there is a universal set of abstract grammatical rules and that the human brain is uniquely suited to learn language. Later, researchers such as Lois Bloom saw a correlation between language and early cognition, maintaining that there is a semantic basis for language learning. Then along came the constructionists who believed that language emerges from social use.
Review the theories put forth by the theorists below:
Skinner
Chomsky
Bloom
Tomasello
Piaget
Vygotsky
Choose two theorists from above and discuss one strength and one weakness of each theory. Borrowing ideas from Skinner, Chomsky, Bloom, Tomasello, Piaget, and Vygotsky how would you articulate your own theory of linguistic development? Support your opinion with at least one scholarly resource.

Nature vs. Nurture

Scenario:

You are the director of an early childhood program serving teen mothers and their children based in the local alternative high school. Your community is partnering with the high school to work with pregnant teens early in their pregnancy to provide education and resources. You are developing an interactive presentation for these teens that discusses factors that influence prenatal development and why this developmental period is critical.

Framing your answers specifically for teen parents, please respond to the following:

Describe critical periods and sensitive periods of development.
Explain how biological factors can influence prenatal development and provide one example.
Explain how environmental factors can influence prenatal development and provide two examples.
Based on these environmental factors, what preventative measures would you share with these teens?

Nature Vs. Nurture

In thinking about the nature versus nurture debate, explain why you think nature, nurture, or both has/have the strongest impact on development. Include information from the video and scholarly resources to support your viewpoint. Please give specific examples from your own development or the development of someone you know.
