My Developmental Journey: A Personal Exploration

This paper is your “Life Story” from a developmental perspective. In this version of your life story, you must include the theories, concepts, and behaviors for each life stage that are described in the textbook.

Stage 1: Newborn and Infancy

Discuss the following aspects of Piaget’s theory: schemes, assimilation, and accommodation (p 16).
Discuss your development of attachment using the four attachment patterns (p. 141). Include a brief of summary of EACH of the four attachment patterns and describe which pattern best describes your attachment pattern and why.
Briefly describe EACH of the temperament types (pp. 146). How would you classify yourself and why?
Stage 2: Preschool Years

Discuss Piaget’s preoperational stage of development (p 166). Include discussion of centration, conservation, and egocentric thinking and symbolic function. Use Piaget’s theory .
Use Vygotsky’s social-cultural theory and describe your language and your schooling during this stage (p. 172). Include a brief summary of Vygotsky’s theory and how your language and schooling relate to his theory. Also include discussion of the zone of proximal development and the role of culture in his theory.
Describe the formation of your gender identity (pp. 183). Do you remember when you realized you were a boy/girl? Which theory from the book do you think relates to how you learned about what was expected of you as a boy or girl? Discuss the theory you chose.
Briefly discuss each of the child rearing styles (Baumrind, Maccoby & Martin, p. 188). Include a description of the style that best suits your parent(s) and why you chose that style. Relate you parent behaviors to the style you chose.
Stage 3: Middle Childhood

Refer to your resolution of Erikson’s stage of industry vs. inferiority. Include how Erikson describes this stage.
Using Kohlberg’s moral development theory, at which level would you have characterized your level of moral reasoning at this age (p. 240)? Include an overall discussion of the theory that includes a brief description of each level and stage of the theory. What did you choose the level you did? (Briefly describe the level you chose and relate your behaviors/thinking to the level you chose.) If you are a female, you may want to refer to the work of Carol Gilligan.
Stage 4: Adolescence

Describe how your experiences fit into Erikson’s theory of Identity vs. Identity confusion. Briefly describe the stage according to Erikson.
Describe your adolescent identity status according to James Marcia’s theory (p. 288). Include a brief description of each status. Include the concepts of crisis and commitment.
Did you experiment with drinking/smoking(including vaping)/other drugs (p. 268)? What types of intervention occurred as a result (if any)? According to your text, what factors are associated with drug use for adolescents?
