Some have considered learning styles to be a factor influencing the L2 learning process, while others consider learning styles to be a neuromyth, pointing to a lack of evidence that students learn better through a self-identified learning style.

Research the topic of learning styles. Will you address learning styles in your instruction of ELLs? Why or why not? Cite resources to support your response.

Learning Styles

Teachers, like students, have particular learning strengths or preferences. In fact, teachers’ learning strengths often influence their teaching styles. For example, a teacher who prefers to learn through auditory means might tend to present information through lectures and discussions, a decision that might prove disadvantageous for students who have difficulty grasping information this way (e.g, students with auditory processing difficulties, English language learners). Remember that it is helpful for both teachers and students to be aware of their learning strengths or preferences. Click here to assess your preferred learning modality using the Barsch Inventory.
When you have finished, submit a 150-200 word response that outlines what your results were, including your highest score area, and lowest score area. Were any of the results surprising to you? Finally, how might you utilize learning inventories with your own students in the future?

In a separate document, answer the following questions about 2 of your scholarly articles. Then, upload your document here.

  1. What is the bibliographic information for your article? Try to do an MLA citation
  2. What is the scholarly field from which your topic is being analyzed in this article? Psychology? Literature? Philosophy, etc.
  3. What is the author’s background
  4. What is the thesis (argument) of the article
  5. Summarize the findings/evidence the author uses to support this argument. This can be in bullet point note form or paragraph form, but do this in a way that is helpful for you to write your paper later. This is a good spot ot make note of any quotes, examples, data, etc. you want to remember for and use in your paper.
  6. How does your perspective, or your goal in your research paper, relate to the argument of this author?

Learning styles.

Research by David Kolb and others suggests that individuals have different learning styles. How would a manager who has a convergent learning style and a manager who has a divergent learning style differ in their approach to learning? Suppose you are going to conduct training sessions designed to teach managers how to give feedback to subordinates. These 2 managers are scheduled to participate. What might you do (if anything) to handle their style differences to ensure that both of them learn the material you present?
