Advanced practice nursing in all specialties is guided by codes of ethics that put the care, rights, duty, health, and safety of the patient first and foremost. PMHNP practice is also guided by ethical codes specifically for psychiatry. These ethical codes are frameworks to guide clinical decision making; they are generally not prescriptive. They also represent the aspirational ideals for the profession. Laws, on the other hand, dictate the requirements that must be followed. In this way, legal codes may be thought to represent the minimum standards of care, and ethics represent the highest goals for care.
For this Discussion, you select a topic that has both legal and ethical implications for PMHNP practice and then perform a literature review on the topic. Your goal will be to identify the most salient legal and ethical facets of the issue for PMHNP practice, and also how these facets differ in the care of adult patients versus children. Keep in mind as you research your issue, that laws differ by state and your clinical practice will be dictated by the laws that govern your state.

Justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) concepts are fundamental to directing resources to inequities and disparities in access across a broad range of civic and private resources. Assessing the hazards and related threats to public health in concert with identification and prioritization of places and communities that benefit most from nursing interventions can begin to address social determinants of health and core public health goals. Understanding the role of JEDI concepts in healthcare is a critical step to identifying populations that are most affected by health care delivery. What is the role JEDI plays in your local community? Consider the characteristics for assessing vulnerability and adaptation in your community. The list provided below may serve to help you frame your response and while not comprehensive, the list serves as a brainstorming tool to help you consider which groups and individuals in your community are likely to benefit most from interventions.

Before you begin to write up your Case, let’s consider what is meant by “critical thinking.” Critical thinking is one of the five key rubric criteria by which your assignments are graded. Therefore, it is required that you demonstrate evidence of critical thinking in all assignments. For an overview of critical thinking, read the following very carefully:

Case Assignment

In a well-written 3- to 4-page paper, discuss how three virtues apply to the Mattel case.

Keys to the Assignment
1.Choose three virtues (e.g., justice, fairness, integrity, courage, honor, truthfulness, etc.), and define each using a reputable online dictionary (e.g., http://www.merriam-webster.com/).
2.Using a section heading for discussion of each of your chosen virtues, discuss how each virtue applies to some ethical issue raised by the Mattel case. For example, you might describe how the virtue you have selected might have been used to more appropriately guide the actions, behaviors, and/or policies of the company (e.g., you may choose to discuss the company’s working conditions, worker safety, company fairness, or Mattel’s attitudes towards the environment).
3.Be sure to use at least two sources from the library to support your discussion and analysis (choose sources that are not included in the Background section of Module 2).
