Human Growth And Development

Scenario
As a child caseworker, you are preparing for a job interview at a human services agency. As a part of the process, you must prepare a writing sample as this role requires written documentation. Additionally, the hiring manager wants to use the writing sample to assess each candidate’s understanding of developmental theory.
Instructions
The writing sample needs to be completed in Microsoft Word and include the following:
• Summarize Piaget’s Four Stages of Cognitive Development
• Summarize Erikson’s Eight Stages of Psychosocial Development
• Explain how understanding these theories are relevant to the role of a caseworker

Human Growth And Development

Theories describe and explain what happens during development. Theories also offer a way of trying to predict behavior. Often theories can be used to understand the people with whom we are closest. For example, Erikson’s 8 Stages might help you understand why your teenage son cares more about his friend’s opinion than your perspective.

For this discussion, think about different development theories and select one:

Piaget’s 4 Stages of Cognitive Development
Erikson’s 8 Stages of Psychosocial Development
Behaviorism
Social Learning Theory
Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory
Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory
Initial Post
In your initial posting:

State the specific theory you have chosen by its proper name.
Provide an example from your life.
Explain how an aspect or concept from the theory helps you understand the provided example.
Response Post
Reply to one peer who has an example that helps your understanding of a theory. Give an example of how their post helped you understand the theory.

Human Growth And Development

The nature-versus-nurture debate questions the extent to which a person’s behavior and personality are a product of genetics (i.e., nature) or whether they are a product of upbringing, environment, life experiences, and influences (i.e., nurture).

As a longstanding study in the field of development, this question is critical to explore when considering factors shaping development.

Initial Post
Think about your behaviors and personality. Do you think these are pre-wired, meaning you inherited these as a result of genetics, or do you feel your personality is a result of your upbringing, your environment, and your life experiences? What is one example of how your development was influenced by nature? What is one example of how your development was shaped by nurture? Which do you think has had more influence on your development nature or nurture? Why?
