Exploring Multiple Intelligences in Academic and Career Success

Multiple Intelligences: Intelligence” was once equated with “what IQ tests measure”, but more recently developed conceptualizations of intelligence emphasize the existence of multiple “types”, or components, of intelligence. What types of intelligence have you used to be successful in college thus far, and how have you used them? What type(s) of intelligence will be most important as you pursue a nursing career and why do you think this type (or these types) will be important? You may choose a single theory of multiple intelligences, possibly commenting on whether it seems to explain adequately your success so far, or you may draw from more than one theory. If you choose to do the latter, I suggest that you do not simply list types of intelligence proposed by various theorists and apply them to yourself; instead, make your discussion integrative. For example, because the theories are not entirely distinct from each other with respect to the types of intelligence that they propose, you might acknowledge redundancies but highlight how applying more than one theory contributes to a fuller understanding of your success.
