Ethical Dilemma

SCENARIO

  1. Discuss how you would resolve the situation differently from how the power of attorney is asking you to by using the codes of ethics for nurses from the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN), as well as other leadership techniques and a biblical worldview.

Ethical Dilemma

After working really hard to distinguish yourself, you’ve finally been promoted to senior account executive at a major advertising agency and placed in charge of the agency’s newest account, a nationally known cereal company. Their product is one you know contains excessive amounts of sugar as well as artificial colorings and lacks any nutritional value whatsoever. In fact, you have never allowed your own children to eat it.
Your boss has indicated that the cereal company would like to use the slogan “It’s good for you” in their new television and print advertising campaign. You know that a $2 billion lawsuit has been filed against the Kellogg and Viacom corporations for marketing junk food to young children. The suit cited “alluring product packaging, toy giveaways, contests, collectibles, kid-oriented websites, magazine ads, and branded toys and clothes.” In addition, two consumer groups have brought suit against children’s television network Nickelodeon for “unfair and deceptive junk-food marketing.”
Your new role at the agency will be tested with this campaign. Doing a good job on it will cement your position and put you in line for a promotion to vice president. But as a responsible parent, you have strong feelings about misleading advertising targeted at susceptible children.
Using a web search tool, locate articles about this topic and then write responses to the following questions. Be sure to support your arguments and cite your sources.
Ethical Dilemma: Do you follow your principles and ask to be transferred to another account? Or do you help promote a cereal you know may be harmful to children in order to secure your career?

Joe has scheduled a meeting with his management team for next week to talk about the Peninsula Hotel chain contract. He hopes that he will be able to work with them to draft a contract favorable to Peninsula that will ensure its renewal for another year. He is reasonably sure that the contract renewal will ensure his continued success and employment with UWEAR. Bill invites Joe and his family to join them on his yacht for the weekend.

Joe is relieved to get the invitation from Bill because their relationship has been strained lately due to the contract negotiations.

Joe must decide how he will answer Bill’s invitation to join him and his family on their yacht.

Deciding to place a loved one into a long-term care facility can be extremely difficult. Even more difficult is the thought of your loved one’s rights being violated while in long-term care. Patient healthcare rights are not as clearly defined as one would expect, and there are long-term care and other healthcare facilities that create their own sets of patient rights. However, there are also certain indisputable rights afforded to patients across the board.

Read the case study titled “A Legal and Ethical Dilemma”, located on pages 463–465 of your text. Next, use the Internet or Strayer Library to research information on a patient’s right to die.

Write a 4–6 page paper in which you:

Describe the legal and ethical dilemma discussed in the case study. Analyze the key ways in which a patient’s right to die relates to this specific case.
From your research, specify the potential repercussions for failure to comply with the wishes of a patient who has requested to withhold a life-sustaining procedure. Next, take a position on whether the patient’s right to die or the patient’s right to be protected from harm should take precedence in this case. Provide a rationale for your position.
Imagine that you are a part of the ethics committee investigating this case. Determine the main facts pertaining to the issue that the committee should consider. Suggest one step that the facility should take next in order to resolve the dilemma. Provide a rationale for your response.
