Employment discrimination

Focus on a policy area of particular relevance to women (Employment discrimination). This will entail researching the current status of this policy from various perspectives, including: how the states and federal government handle this issue, where different political parties and interest groups stand, how active women’s organizations are on this issue, as well as offering suggestions for how this policy should be shaped moving forward. If I approve, you may add a comparative aspect to the paper and compare U.S. policy to another nation(s), but the main focus of the paper must be a U.S. policy of importance to women.
• What is the importance of the chosen policy issue to women/women’s lives?
• What are the current controversies regarding this policy?
• What are the relevant federal or state laws, and/or court cases of importance?
• Who are the proponents of change, and what interests do they represent?
• Who are the opponents, and who do they represent?
• How should this policy be addressed moving forward?

Depending on the topic, you may choose to give a comprehensive overview of an area with general guidelines for practice, or you may examine selected issues after an overview. Perhaps you want to break down a topic into a component part, if you find that is too broad for purposes of this assignment. Where appropriate, you may focus on state laws or local school division policies.

Employment discrimination

Unfortunately, employment discrimination can still be found in all industries across the country. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 defined protected classes of people aiming to reduce discrimination by holding employer’s responsible. Under Title VII of the Act, an individual’s race, color, religion, sex, or national origin is considered a protected class. Age and pregnancy have also been federally recognized protected classes by subsequent legislation.

Discuss if you believe these protected classes go far enough to prevent discrimination in the workplace. Would you add any additional classes of people, if so who and why? Lastly, have you ever experienced any form of discrimination in your employment? If so, how did you resolve the situation?
