Autonomy

Advanced practice nursing in all specialties is guided by codes of ethics that put the care, rights, duty, health, and safety of the patient first and foremost. PMHNP practice is also guided by ethical codes specifically for psychiatry. These ethical codes are frameworks to guide clinical decision making; they are generally not prescriptive. They also represent the aspirational ideals for the profession. Laws, on the other hand, dictate the requirements that must be followed. In this way, legal codes may be thought to represent the minimum standards of care, and ethics represent the highest goals for care.
For this Discussion, you select a topic that has both legal and ethical implications for PMHNP practice and then perform a literature review on the topic. Your goal will be to identify the most salient legal and ethical facets of the issue for PMHNP practice, and also how these facets differ in the care of adult patients versus children. Keep in mind as you research your issue, that laws differ by state and your clinical practice will be dictated by the laws that govern your state.
Topic:Autonomy
• Briefly identify the topic you selected.
• Then, summarize the articles you selected, explaining the most salient ethical and legal issues related to the topic as they concern psychiatric-mental health practice for children/adolescents and for adults.
• Explain how this information could apply to your clinical practice, including specific implications for practice within your state.

Self Actualization, Autonomy, and Relationships

According to Maslow, human beings are hardwired to self actualize, yet he estimated that fewer than 1 percent of the population ever reaches self actualization. Self-actualization is at the top of Maslow’s pyramid of needs, and refers to someone who has met all underlying needs and is operating at a point where they have found their purpose in life. It is more than merely reaching extrinsic goals one sets for himself/herself, but often refers to operating at one’s highest level and discovering what one’s purpose in life is and fulfilling it. This often includes a spiritual component.

Discussions are an opportunity for you to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, interact and challenge your peers respectfully, and support your writing with examples and scholarly resources. Be sure to answer all questions and view the rubric to be sure you can earn maximum points.

This activity addresses Module Outcomes 2, 3, & 4. Upon successful completion of this activity, you will be able to:

MO2: Describe how concepts from Maslow’s theory can be combined with self determination theory to promote self actualization. (CO4)
MO3: Apply motivational theory to personal life and career goals. (CO4)
MO4: Identify an intervention for supporting need satisfaction. (CO3)
This activity aligns with the career competencies of written communication and critical thinking.

For your discussion posting this week, address the following:
Discuss the following:

  1. In your own opinion, what does self actualization mean to you? In other words, if you were operating at a completely self actualized level, what would it look like?
  2. Thinking about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and self actualization, in addition to self determination theory’s identified psychological needs of autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and their role in both motivation and psychological well being, discuss how the two theories interact with one another.
  3. How might you use concepts from these two theories to promote happiness, well-being, and self actualization in your own life?

Autonomy

Autonomy has been a substantial theme of numerous readings in this course. Please reconstruct and critically assess some of the main arguments about the differing accounts of moral autonomy and how these apply to bioethics.
There are four mandatory parts to this paper which are the following
1. A substantive thesis that clearly specifies all of the argument, the main points of the argument, and indicates how these points connect together.
2. A substantive summary of the key points from one or two of the readings on the syllabus. (The reading is attached and the reading is separate from the sources. ). The sources are also attached.
3. Explicit and substantive reference to no less than two legitimate (i.e., peer- reviewed, academically published) secondary sources ( I have attached two sources)
4. A critical component. Please note, a critical component might involve an elaboration of how the paper’s themes relate to the student’s lived experience.
