Text:
Every poem has a speaker, and every story has a narrator. Write an essay focusing on the “voice” of a chosen text: what is their tone? How closely are they related to the story or verse? Are they distant or personally invested? How does characterizing or understanding the speaker or narrator help us understand a deeper level of meaning within the text?

1) What is the meaning of the passage you chose? Why is it important? What is its place in the reading as a
whole?
2) Do you agree with the author’s views or beliefs on the passage? Why or why not?
3) How is this passage relevant to your life? Can thinking about this passage improve your life in any way(s)?
