Advanced Nursing Research

The aim of this assignment is to demonstrate critical appraisal skills at master’s level. Read Burns and Grove, chapter 18 and write the critique following the critical appraisal guidelines that includes the three major steps listed in page 434: 1. identifying the elements of the process 2. Determining the study strengths and weaknesses 3. Evaluating the credibility, trustworthiness, and meaning of the study. Expected paper lenght is 2 pages excluding title and reference pages. Required Textbooks/Readings: Gray, J., Grove, S., Sutherland, Z., (2017) Burns and Grove’s The Practice of Nursing Research, 8th Edition ISBN: 9780323377591 Sample Qualitative study critique: (Follow this sample, pls) Traditional Clinical Setting and Clinical Decision-Making Baxter and Boblin (2008) conducted a Level V qualitative study exploring nursing students’ perceptions of CDM. Nineteen full-time nursing students from four levels of a baccalaureate nursing program were recruited. Permission was obtained from the university’s IRB and students’ informed consent was obtained to participate in the study. Three methods of data collection were utilized; journals, individual interviews and key documents were reviewed. Students were asked to complete two, one-page journals reflecting on clinical situations they encountered in the clinical setting that day. Students were asked to complete the journal entries before coming to their interview. The journal entries “served as jumping point for the interview” (Baxter & Boblin, 2008, p. 346). Guidelines for the journal were given to the students at the beginning of the study. Audio-taped interviews were open-ended sessions lasting from 30 to 60 minutes. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and five key kinds of clinical decisions were identified: assessment, intervention, resource, communication, and action. The third method of data collection of key documents was not discussed in the results of the study. In conclusion, the researchers found that knowing the kinds of clinical decisions that students make or do not make in a clinical setting, direct nurse educators to evaluate whether their curriculum provides the necessary components in facilitating the development of CDM in nursing students. Also discuss study strengths and weaknesses and what this study adds to your EBP project.
