Collins (no relation to Randall Collins) is regarded as an advocate of critical theory, with a perspective that emphasizes both social structural relationships and the importance of social agency, the capacity of individuals to challenge the oppressions and inequalities that structure imposes on them. In the reading, you should be able to recognize the influence of the conflict tradition, especially Weber’s approach to stratification, and the microsociological branch of the Durkheimian tradition, with its emphasis on nonrational collective representations of group interests and identities formed through social interactions.

Collins is well known for her use of the concepts of standpoint and intersectionality. Standpoint refers to the necessity of accounting for the position and identity of the observer of social reality in evaluating their knowledge claims about that reality; pure objectivity is not possible. Intersectionality refers to the situation of individuals in multiple and cross-cutting social hierarchies and inequalities, resulting in complex identities and experiences of domination and subordination.

In this reading Collins is applying these ideas to the experience and activism of African American women in the United States. Note that Collins writes “…while common experiences may predispose Black women to develop a distinctive group consciousness, they guarantee neither that such a consciousness will develop among all women nor that it will be articulated as such by the group.” (p. 171).

For this exercise, try to expand her analysis by focusing on some other intersectionality of social hierarchies (such as race, gender, social class, religion, sexual orientation, or citizenship status) and their impact on identity and activism. You can apply it to your own situation or to that of some other group you are familiar with.

Which social hierarchies are involved in shaping the consciousness of the individual or group you are considering? How do the positions of the individual or group in those hierarchies confer overlapping or conflicting dominant or subordinate status in US society?
What evidence or examples, if any, do you see of specific awareness, identities, and activism on the part of the individual or group based on their intersectionality?

Decide on a city/community that you want to share with others.
Because you will be entering information into two areas: Collaborative Map Form and your journal, we recommend that you first take time to collect all the information required into a word processing document so that you can cut and paste the information directly into the areas.
Create a document in a word processing program. Save the document with the title: YourName_GEOG2221_FinalProject.
Give your first entry a title, “Sense of Place,” and complete steps 1 through 4 below.
Your first entry will provide you with an opportunity to share your sense of place (pages 4 and 8–9 of your textbook and Unit 1) about your location.

1. House Picture
a) The average house price in Canada in September, 2017 was $487,000. What can you buy for that price in your community?
b) Go to the website of a real estate agent who works in the community you are going to share about, and find a house or property listed as close to $487, 000 as possible.

“The Martyrdom of Polycarp: Death in the Roman Games,”

The account of the Martyrdom of Polycarp, written as a letter sent from the church in Smyrna to the church in Philomelium. In this letter members of the community in Smyrna describe the persecution and death of several local Christians and mainly of Polycarp, the bishop of Smyrna, who died around 155 C.E.
An excerpt from an article by Leonard L. Thompson, “The Martyrdom of Polycarp: Death in the Roman Games,” published in 2002.
After you have read both texts, please choose one of the following options for the assignment:

Creative option
The letter describing the death of Polycarp is written from a Christian point of view, but as Leonard Thompson argues in his article, a Roman person sitting among the crowds in the arena would have seen the events differently. Using the information and analysis in Thompson’s article, write a short first-person account of the events surrounding Polycarp’s death from the point of view of a Roman who came to watch the games in the stadium of Smyrna that day. In a separate paragraph at the end, explain how what you learned from Thompson’s article informed the account you wrote.

Analytical option
In his article, Leonard Thompson claims that the Roman games during which Polycarp was executed were a “political theatre.” What does he mean by that? Using specific examples from Thompson’s article, explain how the Roman games were used to foster certain political and social values and how this is reflected in the story of the death of Polycarp.Please write clearly and concisely and be sure to cite any text you use.
