Six Thinking Hats

a. After the title page, begin the paper with an introductory paragraph that states your premise, the reason you are writing the paper, and includes at least three supporting sentences. In a sense, you are providing a map that will guide the reader through the paper.
b. Using separate paragraphs for each one, explain the significance of each of the six hats in the model.
c. The rest of the paper will be given to your application of the Six Thinking Hats to the following scenario.
A family-owned organization, OMA (an acronym for the three-state region of Oklahoma, Missouri, and Arkansas) is one of the premier manufacturers of potato chips for the region. They are noted for producing a high-quality product, reasonable prices, and treating their employees fairly and equitably. They also enjoy a loyal customer base as is witnessed by the number of supermarket managers who report that many people will not buy any other brand of chips.
At a recent manufacturer’s convention, the caterer chose OMA’s potato chips as the chip of choice and served them each day. They also were available during the morning and afternoon break times. Because representatives from all 50 States participated in the convention, the word soon spread across the nation.
Within weeks of the close of the convention, orders began to arrive from outside the three-state region. Of course, the immediate reaction was to write polite refusal letters reaffirming the position of OMA as a small, regional organization. However, after six months, the company had received orders from all 50 States!
You are asked to form a team that will devise a plan of action.
a. Who will you assign to the team (Suggestion: Think both about people with titles and those without titles within the organization to serve on the team.)
b. The first item of business will be whether OMA will remain a regional organization or will it expand to become a national organization.
c. How will you apply the Six Thinking Hats Model to help make the decision?
d. Your application should explore advantages and disadvantages of both situations.
d. Write a concluding paragraph that contains your conclusion and a brief statement of what you learned or how you were challenged by this assignment.
e. Do not forget to include all resources cited in the paper on the references page.

Introduction

The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of the Six Thinking Hats model to a scenario involving a family-owned organization, OMA, which is considering expanding from a regional to a national organization. This paper will first explain the significance of each of the six hats in the model and then apply the model to the decision-making process for OMA. By considering the advantages and disadvantages of both situations, this paper will provide insight into the potential outcomes and challenges that OMA may face in their expansion. Ultimately, this paper aims to offer a comprehensive analysis and recommendation for OMA’s plan of action.

Significance of Each Hat in the Model

The White Hat: The white hat represents facts and information. It encourages objective thinking by focusing on data, statistics, and objective analysis. In the context of OMA, the white hat will help the team gather information about market trends, customer demand, and potential competitors in the national market.

The Red Hat: The red hat represents emotions and feelings. It encourages subjective thinking and allows individuals to share their gut reactions and intuitions. In the case of OMA, the red hat will provide an opportunity for team members to express their personal feelings about expansion, considering factors such as pride in being a regional organization or excitement about the growth potential.

The Black Hat: The black hat represents critical thinking and caution. It focuses on identifying potential risks, challenges, and drawbacks. In the context of OMA, the black hat will help the team analyze the disadvantages of both remaining a regional organization and expanding nationally, such as increased competition or loss of the company’s unique regional identity.

The Yellow Hat: The yellow hat represents optimism and positivity. It encourages exploring the benefits, opportunities, and advantages of a particular decision. For OMA, the yellow hat will help the team identify the potential advantages of national expansion, such as increased market share, higher revenue, and broader customer reach.

The Green Hat: The green hat represents creativity and innovation. It encourages thinking outside the box and generating new ideas. In the case of OMA, the green hat will help the team brainstorm creative strategies for successful national expansion, such as developing new flavors or packaging designs to appeal to a wider audience.

The Blue Hat: The blue hat represents control and organization. It acts as the facilitator of the thinking process and ensures that all perspectives are considered. In the context of OMA, the blue hat will guide the team’s discussion, set objectives, and keep track of progress throughout the decision-making process.

Application of the Six Thinking Hats Model

a. Team Assignment: The team assigned to devise a plan of action for OMA should consist of individuals from different departments within the organization. This could include representatives from operations, marketing, finance, sales, and human resources. Additionally, it would be beneficial to include employees without titles who have a deep understanding of OMA’s culture and customer base.

b. Decision-Making Process: The first item of business for the team will be to thoroughly discuss whether OMA should remain a regional organization or expand nationally. Using the Six Thinking Hats model, each hat can be applied sequentially to analyze different perspectives and gather insights from all team members.

c. Applying the Six Thinking Hats Model: The team can start by wearing the white hat to gather relevant data on market trends, customer demand, and competitive landscape in both regional and national markets. Then, they can switch to the red hat to share their initial emotional reactions and personal feelings about expansion.

Next, they can wear the black hat to critically analyze potential risks and drawbacks associated with both remaining regional and expanding nationally. This will help identify any challenges that may arise in either situation. Following this, they can put on the yellow hat to explore the advantages and opportunities that come with national expansion.

The team can then switch to the green hat to brainstorm creative strategies for successful national expansion. This could involve generating ideas for product diversification, marketing campaigns, or distribution channels. Finally, they can put on the blue hat to facilitate a structured discussion and ensure that all perspectives are heard.

d. Advantages and Disadvantages: The advantages of remaining a regional organization for OMA may include maintaining a strong regional identity, close relationships with customers, and a focused marketing strategy. On the other hand, expanding nationally may offer advantages such as increased revenue, broader customer reach, and potential economies of scale. However, it may also present challenges like heightened competition, higher operational costs, and potential dilution of their unique regional brand.

Conclusion

In conclusion, applying the Six Thinking Hats model to OMA’s decision-making process regarding regional or national expansion can provide valuable insights from different perspectives. By considering the significance of each hat in the model, exploring advantages and disadvantages, and involving a diverse team in the discussion, OMA can make an informed decision about their plan of action. While both options have their merits and challenges, thorough analysis using this model will help OMA identify the best path forward based on their goals, resources, and market conditions.
