CHEM 107 – Spring 2023
** This is an individual/group work (2 or 3 team members) and the same grade will apply to the entire group **
The research project is accounted for divided into two parts:
– Research Paper to be submitted by Monday W10 (15%)
– Presentation which will take place on Tuesday W10 (10%)
In the past, the hospitality and tourism industry had a dramatic impact on the environment and in recent years more
attention has been paid in trying to change this trend with the introduction of greener initiatives.
Here below you can see the ESG framework developed by the United Nations Environment Programme Initiative and it
is strongly related to the 2030 agenda.
In this project, every group will select randomly one of the 12 principles and once assigned:
❖ Each group will have to research the principle, explain its meaning from a hospitality/chemical perspective (i.e.
look at some examples of chemicals related to it) explaining two of its applications in the Hospitality area and
putting it in context with the ESG framework.
Please note that ALL your work should be written in a scientific report/essay style and format and should contain a max
of 1500 Words (+/- 10%)
Here below is a rough guide:
1. Title: in your title, together with the number of the principle you should mention at least few words of its applications. (This
should be on the title page) (5 points)
2. Aim: in one sentence or in the form of a question, sum up what you will be investigating. (5 points)
3. Hypothesis: describe your assigned Green Chemistry principle and its applications highlighting the differences with the previous
scenario. (15 points)
4. Observations: provide research facts and statistics including photos where applicable (with reference sources). (15 points)
5. Conclusions: From the investigation, what have you found? Is the industry moving in the right direction to make our world
greener? Link this to your hypothesis – Add any other ideas you found relevant to your research as well as the action plan that you
would like to put in place to make the changes happen. (10 points)
