RESPOND TO THE FEMALE AS IF YOU ARE SPEAKING TO THE WRITER DIRECTLY

Whether biracial or monoracial, everyone has come in contact with the question: what are you? Sometimes this question is just an innocent inquiry about what a person is, or sometimes it asked to justify a certain stereotype. Majority pf people who get this question are people that look or say that they are biracial; that is why Tran, Miyake, Martinez-Morales, and Csizmadia (2016) did a research study where they looked multiracial individual’s responses to the question at hand. The overall study involved: forty college students (Tran et al., 2016). During their study Tran et al. (2016) did an online study where they were given fake scenarios where racial identification was given by other people (e.g. Caucasian, racial minority, or unspecified individual). During the study they gave answers to these open-ended situations; they looked at the differences during each situation, the affect it has on the individual, and how they communicated it (Tran et al., 2016). In the end, almost ninety three percent of the people involved in the study connected with experiences; while almost forty three percent said the scenario matched their experience “a lot” (Tran et al., 2016). On the opposite side, three percent of people surveyed had no connections with the scenario given (Tran et al., 2016). In its entirety, Tran et al. (2016) said that microaggression had subtle effect on a person’s racial identification when they are biracial.

Speaking of microaggression, it is the unintentional discrimination of people, of a certain minority group. Looking at the question, I do believe that this question is a form of microaggression. I mean, why do people need to know what you are, knowing what a person is not going to change them as a person. As for, who asks you the question, I do believe that the person asking it effects a person’s response. For example, if a person is biracial and their monoracial family member asks them the question. They would probably equally choose either ethnicity; one response will justify their difference in appearance among other family members, while the other response will be to connect with the person asking the question. All in all, with this study the take home message is: the question what you are is a racial norm among biracial individuals. People are always curious about things, especially when it comes to race.
