Please note: my internship was held at Kaiser Permanente, where I help draft up a report, working with medical directors, my manager, and the quality management department to write up the organization-specific NCQA HPA QI 5 and 6 standard outcomes. Please write these essays reflective on the health care management/administration experience at that facility. Please see below for paper details.
Program Learning Outcome (PLO) Essays
By the time students complete the healthcare Administration program, each of the 5 program learning outcomes (PLOs) should have been achieved. By the end of the program, the successful participant should be able to demonstrate that s/he can:
1. Communicate clearly and concisely with internal and external customers, establish and maintain relationships, and facilitate constructive interactions with individuals and groups
2. Inspire individual and organizational excellence, create and attain a shared vision, and successfully manage change to attain the organization’s strategic ends and successful performance
3. Align personal and organizational conduct with ethical and professional standards that include a responsibility to the patient and community, a service orientation, and a commitment to lifelong learning and improvement
4. Understand the health care system and the environment in which health care managers and providers function
5. Apply business principles to the health care environment. Basic business principles include financial management, human resource management, organizational dynamics and governance, strategic planning and marketing, information management, risk management, and quality improvement.
The purpose of the PLO Essays is for you to demonstrate the degree to which you have achieved the PLOs and to reflect on what you have learned in the program. There are 5 PLOs so there will be 5 individual PLO Essays. Each PLO Essay should be a minimum of 5 pages and a maximum of 7 pages, excluding the title page and reference page. Page numbers should be included at the bottom right-hand margin, and the title page should not be numbered. Do not include a running head.
You should write the essays in first-voice, meaning that you should use “I” statements. Since you are describing what happened in the past, you should use the active past tense. For example, this statement is written in active, first-voice, and past tense: “While in the MS-HCA program, I learned how health care insurance functions and how critical health care insurance is to assessing health care services.” The word “I” is in first-voice and the word “learned” is in active past tense.
The 5 essays should be double-spaced; using the Arial 12 point font (or equivalent), with one-inch margins. APA-style formatting is only required for the in-text citations and the reference page. For help with the APA-style formatting, please see https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/.
Each paragraph should have a 5-space indentation. Do not quadruple space at the end of a paragraph. There should only be a double space between the end of a paragraph and the next paragraph.
Each of the 5 essays should contain the following components:
Title Page: This should include your name, your Net ID, and the quarter in which you enrolled in HCA 9999. Note: the quarter in which you enrolled, not the quarter in which you are submitting the essay. The title page does not contribute to the required minimum pages.
Body: The body of each PLO essay should be a minimum of 5 pages and a maximum of 7 pages. In the body of each PLO essay, you should discuss the PLO-related skills and knowledge base that you developed in the program, as well as the coursework, assignments, program experiences, and readings that helped you to develop these skills and knowledge base. Please be sure to include in-text citations when referring to any textbooks, courses, or assignments. Do not include the entire PLO statement in the body of the essay.
In the PLO 1 essay, you should discuss the different communication, facilitative, collaborative, and teamwork skills developed in the program and how they were developed.
In the PLO 2 essay, you should discuss the different leadership, strategic planning, and change management skills developed in the program and how they were developed.
In the PLO 3 essay, you should discuss the different professional and ethical standards and skills developed in the program and how they were developed.
In the PLO 4 essay, you should discuss the development of your understanding of the key features of the US health care system, key features of any alternative health care systems, and the social, economic, political factors affecting the context of health care and how your understanding was developed.
In the PLO 5 essay, you should discuss your understanding of the seven business principles and their application in the health care system and how your understanding was developed. The seven business principles are: financial management, human resource management, organizational dynamics and governance, strategic planning and marketing, information management, risk management, and quality improvement.
Reference Page: This section requires in-text references and citations to document sources. This consists of a list of all the books, articles, manuals, internet sites etc. cited in the essay. For each PLO essay, there must be a minimum of 5 references. You must use APA-style formatting for the in-text citations and the reference page. The reference page can be numbered, but it does not contribute to the required minimum of 5 pages for each essay
