Part 1
Dr. Gray’s research on indigenous Canadian youth does address the three goals of Photovoice.
- Recording and reflecting on their community’s strengths and concerns: The youth in the study took photographs of the things they saw as strengths and concerns in their community. These photographs helped them to reflect on their community and to identify the things that they wanted to change.
- Promoting critical dialogue and knowledge about community issues through group discussion of photographs: The youth in the study met in groups to discuss their photographs. These discussions helped them to develop a deeper understanding of the issues facing their community and to come up with ideas for how to address these issues.
- Reaching policy makers: The youth in the study presented their photographs and findings to policy makers. This helped to raise awareness of the issues facing indigenous Canadian youth and to advocate for change.
Part 2
The two Photovoice studies that we have read about so far are the study of women in China and the study of Mayan women in Guatemala.
The study of women in China was effective in terms of influencing change in the community. The women in the study took photographs of the discrimination that they faced, and they presented these photographs to government officials. This helped to raise awareness of the issue of gender discrimination in China, and it led to some changes in government policy.
The study of Mayan women in Guatemala was also effective in terms of influencing change in the community. The women in the study took photographs of the violence that they faced, and they presented these photographs to the media. This helped to raise awareness of the issue of violence against women in Guatemala, and it led to some changes in government policy.
It is difficult to say which of these two studies was more effective in terms of influencing change in the community. Both studies were effective in raising awareness of important issues, and both studies led to some changes in government policy. However, the study of women in China may have been more effective in terms of influencing change because it was conducted in a country with a more centralized government.
In addition to the two studies that we have read about, there are many other examples of Photovoice projects that have been effective in influencing change in the community. For example, a Photovoice project in the United States was effective in raising awareness of the issue of homelessness, and it led to the development of new programs to help the homeless. Another Photovoice project in Kenya was effective in raising awareness of the issue of water scarcity, and it led to the construction of new water wells.
Photovoice is a powerful tool that can be used to raise awareness of important issues and to advocate for change. The studies that we have read about are just a few examples of the many ways that Photovoice has been used to make a difference in the world.
