Occupational Therapy & Psychosocial Challenges

Consider the role of the occupational therapist in supporting service users through occupation-focused interventions, drawing on (at least 3 out of 5) illustrative examples from the group work case studies and covering mental health and learning disability practice
• Demonstrate an understanding of the biopsychosocial nature of health and wellbeing
• Discuss the functional impact of psychiatric conditions (and learning disability) on individuals’ occupational performance
• Discuss the role of the occupational therapist in supporting mental health service users, demonstrating appropriate engagement with the evidence base to support your professional reasoning
The assessment is based on the PBL work carried out during the module (related to the five case studies). Students are expected to:
• reflect on the PBL discussions about occupation-focused interventions in the case study workshops, as guided by the workshop facilitator
• draw from these discussions some illustrative examples of the broader, over-arching practice principles that shape contemporary practice (which have been presented in the workshops and the lead lectures, and which the student will have done some additional reading about)
• write an evaluative reflection on the ways in which these over-arching practice principles may be operationalised, or put into use, in diverse ways, depending on service context and service user need, as represented in the five case studies. This should be done with reference to supporting evidence from wider reading for the use of the particular interventions covered in the essay
