FORMAT:
1. MUST BE IN ESSAY FORMAT; SIX (6) FULL PAGE MINIMUM. Failure to comply with the 6 full page minimum requirement will automatically result in a lowered grade.
2. PAPERS THAT ARE LESS THAN HALF THE REQUIRED MINIMUM (3 PAGES OR LESS) WILL GET AN AUTOMATIC GRADE OF 0/F!!
3. Essay must be typed, double-spaced only throughout the paper. No “creative” spacing will be accepted. To begin a new paragraph, simply indent.
4. Font Size – NO LARGER THAN 12 Point (**this is an example of 12 point/Times New Roman font**).
5. Citations – you MUST use an acceptable format for citing sources; i.e., APA, MLA, footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical are ALL acceptable. Failure to cite sources of information used in your paper, whether directly quoted or paraphrased, is plagiarism, which is unacceptable, and will significantly lower your grade and could result in a grade of “O/F”! All work submitted must be your original work!
6. Sources – In addition to the book, My Soul Is Rested, you may also include information from videos shown in class, reading assignments, and other sources, such as websites EXCEPT “WIKIPEDIA”- WHICH IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE SOURCE! Cite all sources used, including My Soul Is Rested, in a “Works Cited” page. The “Works Cited” page is NOT included in the 6 full page minimum.
7. Maintain consistency throughout your paper; i.e., use the same margins as well as the same font and font size throughout. The same is true for citation style. If you use footnotes, then use footnotes throughout.
8. Your paper SHOULD NOT EXCEED 20% “Similarity” on “SAFEASSIGN.”

ASSIGNMENT: Whenever the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s is mentioned, two names usually come to mind: Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. However, as Howell Raines has illustrated, there were many lesser known individuals who played a part in the movement. You are NOT to discuss Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King, Jr.; you are to look at the part the lesser known individuals played in the Civil Rights Movement!

In a 6 FULL PAGE MINIMUM ESSAY, you are to focus on these “lesser known” individuals and respond to ALL of the following:
Introduction – begin with a thesis statement (what, specifically, will you be addressing in your paper). This should not be more than 2-3 sentences in length.

Discuss the Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South from the perspective of at least TWO (2) of the following segments/groups involved in the Civil Rights Movement: (include names of individuals associated with each of the following)
Students (such as members of SNCC and SDS)
Lawyers and law enforcement officers
News reporters
Black activists/organizers
Government officials or politicians (either local, state, or federal)
White anti-Civil Rights activists
In addition, discuss the perspectives of both specific men and women in the movement. What part did gender play in the Civil Rights Movement? Did the fact one was a man or a woman impact how individuals were treated by members of the various Civil Rights organizers, politicians, law enforcement officers, or news reporters? Provide evidence, including a discussion of specific individuals, to support your answers!
Based on your analysis of the participant’s accounts, what were the “successes” and/or “failures” of the Civil Rights movement? Provide evidence from the book to support your answers.

Please note: you MUST provide evidence from the book; use the “voices” of the participants in the Civil Rights Movement to support your answers. In order to get the maximum points possible, facts (quotes/evidence from the book) are required. You may use additional sources; however, the Raines book must be your primary source of information used for analysis. ALL sources used must be properly cited**
