Using Mrs. Dalloway as your model, write a parodied short story in which you are the main character, setting out on your day, with some seemingly big event looming in your mind. Specifically mirror and parody the syntax. Borrow from the imagery, characters, inner thoughts, and voice of the narrative. Use the distinction between what is being said by characters and what is being thought. Bring out the themes of the novel in your life and day. Who would you meet along your morning? What task(s) would you need to accomplish? What varying degrees of perception and point of you might you encounter, (something similar to the backfiring of the car or the skywriting). Who are the secondary characters of your life? What thoughts of the past might you be reminded of on this day? Think of this as an exercise into the style and voice of Virginia Woolf, but have mad fun with it, also! We will work on this some, in class, but you should spend substantial time on it, outside of class.
