book, and which I have not discussed in class) by leaders: Coleman Hawkins (ts,
b.1904), Art Tatum (p, b.1909), Mary Lou Williams (p, b.1910), Charlie Christian (g,
b.1916), Ella Fitzgerald (v, b. 1917), Thelonious Monk (p, b. 1917), Dizzy Gillespie (t, b.
1917), Anita O’Day (v, b. 1919), Charlie Parker (as, b. 1920), Oscar Pettiford (b, b.1922),
JJ. Johnson (tb, b. 1924), Sarah Vaughan (v, b. 1924), or Bud Powell (p, b. 1924), that
was recorded between 1942-1948, and write a short essay (with a clear thesis statement,
or “point” you are making) discussing the recording in terms of: What is the musical effect
of the specific recording, and how is that achieved? Provide enough analysis and musical
details to support your point. …information and discussion related to the social and
