The purpose of the task is for you to:
Design a 2 hour literacy block plan for Year 1 that demonstrates understanding and application of a repertoire of approaches and strategies reflecting current best English literacy teaching, learning and assessment practice and includes resources. A template example of a literacy block plan is uploaded. Use the template uploaded to design the literacy block plan.
You are to:
Plan a 2 hour structured literacy block for Year level 1, incorporating the teaching approaches associated with reading, writing, speaking and listening and including oral language: Read aloud, write aloud, think aloud, modeled, shared, guided, independent, practice and reflection.
You must provide:
The learning focus/intentions of your 2 hour literacy block with reference to the Victorian Curriculum English Content Descriptions and Achievement Standards Descriptions. Define any terms using references to support your definitions. For example, when doing a writing block, you learning intention could be ‘How to write a simple sentence’?
The structure and planning of the entire 2-hour literacy block including key questions and both student and teacher activities using the template provided.
An overview of Speaking and Listening: Summarize (or annotate the plan to show) how listening and speaking has been included within the 2 hour literacy block and some comment on future lessons and teaching that could take place.
A Reference List of resources: Include in-text citations and a reference list of all the sources that you have referred to throughout the assignment, using APA6 referencing.
Minimum references, more are expected: 1 journal article, 1 textbook (uploaded), 1 website.
Appendices: Include a copy of the teacher script for your modeled/shared reading and writing and any other resources.
The 2-hour Literacy block must include:
1) Strong links made to relevant references and Victorian curriculum.
2) Planning for student engagement clearly demonstrated/ Connection to student’s learning clearly shown for:
• Key questions
• Student and teacher activities
• Whole class activity at beginning of each hour.
• Teacher led small groups.
• Small group and/or independent activities.
• Whole class reflection at the end of each hour.
3) Summary of how speaking and listening is included in the literacy block.
4) For the reading block, must include some form of formative assessment.
