Linguistic and Cultural Differences

We all know the importance of learning about other cultures and languages especially as the USA is home to millions of immigrants. Someone’s first language and home culture can positively and/or negatively affect their English language learning experiences. The following list includes ten countries with the most number of immigrants in the USA in the year 2020.

Top 10 Countries of Origin for Immigrants to the U.S. (2020)
Mexico — 100,325
India — 46,363
China — 41,483
Dominican Republic — 30,005
Vietnam — 29,995
Philippines — 25,491
El Salvador — 17,907
Brazil — 16,746
Cuba — 16,367
South Korea — 16,244

Choose two countries from the list. Then, you should do some research and find the followings for both countries you have selected.:

1- One linguistic difference in their dominant language which makes it harder for those immigrants to learn English.

2- One cultural norm which does not exist in the American culture or it is very different.

How can you find such information? Well, you have multiple options. From reading books, articles, etc. on the internet, to watching videos, documentaries and so on. However, the best way would be to talk to someone from that country. Remember, each of these countries may have areas in which different languages are spoken and different cultures are being practiced. Don’t worry. You just focus on one language and one area. Here’s an example about Japan (which is not in that list).

Linguistic difference:

The reason Japanese have difficulty with English is because of the limited range of vocalization used in the Japanese language. Instead of an alphabet of vowels and consonants, Japanese has 5 vowels and a syllabary made up by combining one of the vowels with each of 14 consonants, with some exceptions plus a few odd vowels. There is also an “n” sound that is the only consonant which comes at the end of a word. Cultural Difference:

America has diverse racial demographics, and Japan is predominantly Japanese. Therefore, Japanese immigrants may find it harder to deal with people from all around the world. (Source: https://owlcation.com/social-sciences/Cultural-Differences-Between-the-US-and-JapanLinks to an external site.)

So when you find the cultural and linguistic differences for each of the two countries you have selected, you need to write an essay about it (minimum 1000 words). Here’s what you should cover in your essay:

1- Why did you choose those two countries? (personal interests, friends, etc.)
2- How did you find the information? What sources did you use?
3- explain the linguistic and cultural differences for country #1. Then, discuss how teachers in k-12 schools can help immigrants with those challenges.
4- Do the same for country #2
5- What did you learn from this assignment? Anything interesting, shocking, etc.?
