Land Treaties
Students will research the following questions about Land Treaties and choose a specific treaty in Ontario to discuss:
- What is a Treaty and how are treaties recognized in law?
- What is the Royal Proclamation of 1763 and what role did it have in the Upper Canada Land Surrenders?
- Briefly discuss the Upper Canada Land Surrenders (e.g. ranger of years they were signed, geographical location etc.) and its role in the settlement of Ontario.
- Briefly explain what the Williams Treaties including discussion of location, Size and First Nations Group and unfair treatment of First Nations groups..
- Briefly discuss the history of a specific Upper Canada Land Surrender (treaty) in Southern Ontario (e.g. Haldimand Tract – Treaty No. 4).
- Are municipalities in Ontario required to consult Indigenous communities through the land use planning process?
- Brieflyd iscuss the current issues/problems with signed treaties and unfair treatment of Indigenous communities.
