Topic: Homelessness

Homelessness is a social issue that I find particularly interesting to explore from a social science perspective. It is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects individuals, families, and communities worldwide. By delving into this topic, I hope to shed light on the underlying causes of homelessness and the various challenges faced by homeless individuals, as well as the potential solutions that can be implemented to address this issue.

One specific issue that I plan to focus on in my final project is the impact of mental health on homelessness. Studies have shown that a significant proportion of the homeless population suffers from mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. Understanding the relationship between mental health and homelessness is crucial in developing effective strategies to provide appropriate support and resources for those in need.

Another issue that I will explore is the role of affordable housing in addressing homelessness. The lack of affordable housing options is often cited as one of the primary reasons why individuals become homeless or struggle to transition out of homelessness. By examining this issue, I aim to highlight the importance of affordable housing policies and explore potential solutions for increasing access to safe and affordable housing for homeless individuals.

The two social sciences that I have chosen to examine the issue of homelessness are sociology and psychology. Sociology provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the societal factors that contribute to homelessness, such as poverty, inequality, and social exclusion. It allows us to analyze the structural causes and consequences of homelessness, including the impact of social policies and economic systems on individuals and communities.

Psychology, on the other hand, offers insights into the individual experiences and psychological well-being of homeless individuals. It helps us understand the mental health challenges faced by homeless individuals and the impact of homelessness on their overall well-being. By combining sociological and psychological perspectives, we can gain a more holistic understanding of homelessness and develop effective interventions and policies to address this issue.

According to the learning resources from the course materials, sociology and psychology are widely recognized disciplines for studying social issues. In “Introduction to Sociology” by OpenStax, it is highlighted that sociology provides tools for understanding social problems and examining their causes and consequences. Similarly, in “Introduction to Psychology” by OpenStax, it is emphasized that psychology helps us understand human behavior and mental processes, making it relevant for studying issues such as homelessness that involve individual experiences and psychological factors. These resources validate the selection of sociology and psychology as suitable disciplines for examining the issue of homelessness.
