Write a Case study on the online media company HitREcord. This is a group assessment and the part that needs to be completed are the last two points of the discussion section.
The first half of this unit has wrangled with questions of creativity in the context of
commercial entertainment by focusing on some of the most pressing issues and concerns
confronting the entertainment sector. In particular, we have examined how changes in
production, circulation, and consumption have upended longstanding practices in the
business, prompting professionals to rethink their assumptions about everything from
business models to audiences. In short, you’ve learned how uncertain times create both
possibilities and challenges for the entertainment industries.
It’s imperative for all entertainment professionals to critically evaluate how well their
competitors are navigating the complexities of an industry undergoing constant change.
Drawing from sound research and informed analysis, you must know what your peers are
(or are not) doing well to calculate your own strategic decisions.
Accordingly, in groups, you will produce a case study response that (1) analyses the key
issues or concerns raised by a particular entertainment company, brand, or product, and (2)
extrapolate from your analysis key insights or lessons learned that apply to the
entertainment industries more generally.
Ultimately, this assessment challenges your initiative by asking you to identify both explicit
and implicit alignment between your case study and significant trends in the entertainment
industry; raises your awareness by introducing you to some compelling developments in
the sector; and demands logic and rationale by prompting an evidence-based assessment
and application.
Please use the following conceptual questions to guide your analysis:
• How does your case study intersect with larger developments in the entertainment
industries?
• Why is your case study particularly compelling to the entertainment industries
more generally?
• In short, what makes it noteworthy, and what can we learn?
We will assign one of the following case studies to your group:
• HitRecord
• BINGEFEST
• Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships
• Drafthouse Films [http://drafthousefilms.com]
• JungleLove Music & Arts Festival
According to the Library’s Cite | Write Resource, a case study response provides a
“description of a real life situation which requires you to analyse the main issues
involved. These issues need to be discussed and related to the academic literature and/or
research findings on the topic and conclusions then drawn about why the situation
occurred and how best to respond to it.”
Format [~3500 – 4500 words]
Your case study response must include the following elements:
I. Title Page
Make sure to include a creative title along with each member’s name and student
number
I. Introduction [~250-500 words]
Briefly introduce the case study and the key issues it raises
II. Description [~800-1000 words]
Provide a more considered history of your case study.
Here you need to provide an unknowing reader with relevant background information to
understand your case study and the issues it raises.
This section will vary depending on your particular case study but some details to
consider:
• Who is involved?
• What are some key moments in its history?
• What was the original vision, mission, or intention?
• What adjustments, if any, have been made over time?
• What are its notable successes, failures, or controversies?
• What are the general contours of its business model (i.e., how is it supposed to make
money?)?
• Who is its imagined audience?
• How is it marketed?
• How have audiences and critics responded?
III. Discussion [~1500-2000 words]
Analyze the larger issues or concerns raised by your particular case study.
Here you need to identify how your case study aligns with what you have learned about the
entertainment industries. You must support your analysis with academic and contextual
sources.
This section will vary depending on your particular case study but some details to
consider:
• How does the case study link to our discussions, readings, and your own
independent research? What issues or concerns factor most prominently and why?
• How does the case study compare to competitors, peers, or industry leaders? How
does it mark itself as different? Why?
• How did the case study account for (or fail to account for) certain trends or changes
in the sector?
• What are the implications of the issues raised and for whom?
IV. Recommendations/Conclusion [~500-1000 words]
Revisit key lessons from your case study and what they suggest about the entertainment
industries. Here you need to extrapolate general lessons from your case study’s fate.
This section will vary depending on your particular case study but some details to
consider:
• Based on your analysis, what general recommendations might you make to other
entertainment ventures? What was key to its success or failure?
• Based on your analysis, what best/worst practices emerge for this entertainment
sector or others? What advice can generate based on your analysis?
• Based on your analysis, how does your case study effectively balance creativity
against changes in the business of entertainment?
Your recommendation should offer compelling advice nevertheless shaped by the
practicalities of the entertainment business. Make sure to support your assessment with
external research and evidence.
An excellent case study response will demonstrate
• a sophisticated application of knowledge gained from the unit;
• a convincing assessment of the main issues involved;
• a well-developed extrapolation based on sound analysis; and
• strong evidence and supporting documentation gathered through external research.
You are expected to use effective transitions between ideas and paragraphs. You are
encouraged to use headings and subheadings to improve the clarity of your response but
they are not an effective substitute for transitional words or phrases.
Citations
This assessment requires you to do significant research. While there are no minimum
references required, strong submissions will demonstrate a thorough and well-documented
chronicle of your case study using both academic literature and contextual/industry articles
from trade publications and the popular press.
You are expected to incorporate material from library research as well as class when
appropriate.
