It is true that families go through many difficulties. In fact, it’s really quite hard to keep family together and it always has been. Sickness, death, divorce, unemployment, illness, etc. etc. get in the way of the idyllic family function.So while we think of the families being in independent unit, in reality, we know that the family does not operate in a vacuum but needs lots of resourcing in order to function well. We see the resourcing in the form of religious communities, educational opportunities, workplace transformation assistance, etc. We also see direct help like housing interest and child care tax deductions, child and earned-income tax credits, and housing and health insurance subsidies. When is resourcing from the larger society beneficial, and when does such resourcing create unhealthy dependency?
