Ethical Concerns in the Field of Behavior Analysis

Over the course of this semester, we have delved into various ethical concerns that are prevalent in the field of behavior analysis. As aspiring practitioners, supervisors, and future BCBAs, it is imperative that we address these ethical considerations and develop strategies to ensure ethical practice.

1. Primary Concern about Practitioner in the Field: One primary concern as a practitioner in the field of behavior analysis is maintaining client confidentiality. It is essential to respect the privacy and confidentiality of clients, as they trust us with their personal information. To ensure ethical practice, I will strictly adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). This includes obtaining informed consent from clients and their guardians, storing sensitive information securely, and only sharing relevant information with authorized personnel.
2. Primary Concern about Supervisor in the Field: As a supervisor, whether overseeing RBTs, paraprofessionals, or future BCBAs, my primary concern is ensuring that ethical standards are upheld by those under my supervision. To address this concern, I will emphasize the importance of ongoing professional development and training. By providing regular supervision and mentoring, conducting performance evaluations, and promoting a culture of open communication, I will strive to create an environment where ethical practices are consistently reinforced.
3. Primary Concern about Ethical Responsibility for an Organization: Ethical responsibility for an organization involves ensuring that ethical standards are embedded within its policies, procedures, and practices. One primary concern is the potential conflict between organizational goals and ethical obligations. To address this concern, I will advocate for the establishment of an ethical committee or task force within the organization. This committee would be responsible for reviewing policies and procedures to ensure they align with ethical guidelines and promoting a culture of ethical decision-making throughout the organization.
4. Newly Considered Ethical Concern: One aspect that I had not considered prior to this class is the potential ethical implications of social media use in the field of behavior analysis. It is crucial to carefully evaluate the potential risks, benefits, and ethical implications associated with such interventions. Any use of aversive techniques should be guided by rigorous ethical standards, ensuring that they are the least restrictive and only implemented when all other alternatives have been exhausted.
