Bosnia and Herzegovina: Former European Country Affiliation
Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the Balkan region of Europe, was part of the former country known as Yugoslavia. Following the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the early 20th century, Bosnia and Herzegovina became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in 1918. Subsequently, it remained a constituent republic within the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia until the country’s dissolution amid ethnic conflicts in the 1990s.
First Explorer to Sail Around the World
The first explorer to sail around the world was Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. In 1519, Magellan set out on a voyage funded by the Spanish crown, aiming to find a westward route to the Spice Islands (modern-day Indonesia). Despite Magellan’s death during the expedition in the Philippines, one of his ships, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, completed the circumnavigation in 1522.
