Short Essay Assignment: “Ethics” The student will analyze how their culture, background, and affiliations influence their unconscious or informal sense of morality, the student will also evaluate how their own informal ethics compares to the formal ethical systems presented by various philosophers, Finally the student will formalize some aspects of their own ethics by crafting original arguments and examples to defend and support their ethics against possible counter-arguments. Students should avoid first-person expressions (until the concluding persuasive paragraph). Students must use one primary source text and at least one secondary source text. PARAMETERS The essay must be a minimum of 500 words plus a Works Cited page. The essay must be formatted in standard MLA format: 1” margins, Times New Roman font, 12-point font, double-spaced, pages numbered at top right with last name, first page formatted with information and centered title. Citations should be parenthetical and follow MLA conventions. Students should decide on three elements to successfully complete the assignment: Identify your own ethical framework from the basic list below. Choose an ethical framework different from your own (hereafter, the “alternate” framework.) Compare and contrast your framework with the alternate framework and identify three points of disagreement. Defend your framework against the alternate’s objections to your framework by framing counter-arguments. Within the paper, use three ethical dilemmas as examples to show the different decisions made by yours and the alternate.
