Scenario
A student in the NSCC Business Administration program class on Applied Entrepreneurship has
been given an assignment to come up with a business idea and write a business plan for it.
Their idea is to open a craft brewery.
A business plan requires them to research market factors including demographics, trends, social
and cultural factors, and government regulations relating to their business. They are new to
both the process of writing a business plan and to the research that needs to be done to create
one and have come to the library for assistance. You are the library staff person who is helping
them.
Assignment steps
1. Review the NSCC Library Guide on Business Administration
https://subjectguides.nscc.ca/businessadmin and select three resources that you would
suggest to the student for their information needs.
Important: One of these three resources MUST be Statistics Canada.
2. Record a screen capture (5 -7 minutes) where you present this LibGuide to an imagined
student (ie. frame your presentation as though you are giving actual instruction to a
student in the library, not telling me what you would do in this situation).
Your presentation must:
• Explain to the student what a LibGuide is
• Explain to the student the purpose of this LibGuide in particular
3. From the guide, highlight three resources of specific use to this student’s information
need. (two resources AND Statistics Canada = total of three).
To highlight your selected resources, you should explain what the resource is and why it
is useful AND give the student a basic introduction to its interface (i.e. How to use it).
4. Separately, write a short report that answers the following questions:
• What information did you consider in choosing each resource for your student?
Explain this per resource not overall. (Hint: appropriateness of content to
student needs and evaluation criteria)
• Locate an additional resource that is not featured in the LibGuide: why is this
useful to your patron? (Hint: appropriateness of content to student needs and
evaluation criteria)
• In a short paragraph, briefly state two things you learned about providing
reference services for business topics through this activity and why are they
significant.
