Developing a Personal Leadership Philosophy

Many of us can think of leaders we have come to admire, be they historical figures, pillars of the industry we work in, or leaders we know personally. The leadership of individuals such as Abraham Lincoln and Margaret Thatcher has been studied and discussed repeatedly. However, you may have interacted with leaders you feel demonstrated equally competent leadership without ever having a book written about their approaches.
What makes great leaders great? Every leader is different, of course, but one area of commonality is the leadership philosophy that great leaders develop and practice. A leadership philosophy is basically an attitude held by leaders that acts as a guiding principle for their behavior. While formal theories on leadership continue to evolve over time, great leaders seem to adhere to an overarching philosophy that steers their actions.
What is your leadership philosophy? In this Assignment, you will explore what guides your own leadership.

To Prepare:
•    Identify two to three scholarly resources, in addition to this Module’s readings, that evaluate the impact of leadership behaviors in creating healthy work environments.
•    Reflect on the leadership behaviors presented in the three resources that you selected for review.
•    Reflect on your results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment*, and consider how the results relate to your leadership traits.
*not required to submit CliftonStrengths Assessment
The Assignment (2-3 pages):
Personal Leadership Philosophies
Develop and submit a personal leadership philosophy that reflects what you think are characteristics of a good leader. Use the scholarly resources on leadership you selected to support your philosophy statement. Your personal leadership philosophy should include the following:
•    A description of your core values.
•    A personal mission and vision statement.
•    An analysis of your CliftonStrengths Assessment summarizing the results of your profile
•    A description of two key behaviors that you wish to strengthen.
•    A development plan that explains how you plan to improve upon the two key behaviors you selected and an explanation of how you plan to achieve your personal vision. Be specific and provide examples.

Title: Developing a Personal Leadership Philosophy

Introduction Leadership is a crucial aspect of any organization or team. Great leaders possess a unique leadership philosophy that guides their behavior and decision-making. In this essay, we will explore the characteristics of a good leader and develop a personal leadership philosophy. By reflecting on scholarly resources and the results of the CliftonStrengths Assessment, we can gain insights into our core values, mission, vision, and areas for improvement.

Core Values A good leader is driven by a set of core values that define their actions and behaviors. These values serve as a moral compass and guide leaders in making ethical decisions. For example, integrity, accountability, empathy, and collaboration are common core values that contribute to effective leadership. These values create a culture of trust, respect, and transparency within the organization.

Personal Mission and Vision Statement A personal mission statement outlines an individual’s purpose and the impact they seek to make in their role as a leader. It reflects their passion and long-term goals. A personal vision statement describes the desired future state that the leader envisions for themselves and their team. For instance, a leader’s mission could be to empower and inspire others to reach their full potential, while their vision could be to create a positive and inclusive work environment that fosters innovation and growth.

Analysis of CliftonStrengths Assessment The CliftonStrengths Assessment provides valuable insights into an individual’s strengths and talents. By understanding our strengths, we can leverage them to enhance our leadership effectiveness. For example, if one of our strengths is strategic thinking, we can utilize this to analyze complex situations and make informed decisions. By aligning our leadership style with our strengths, we can maximize our potential and positively impact our team.

Key Behaviors for Improvement Even great leaders have areas for improvement. Identifying these areas allows us to focus on personal growth and development. Two key behaviors that I wish to strengthen are active listening and delegation. Active listening involves fully engaging with others, seeking to understand their perspectives, and demonstrating empathy. Delegation is essential for effective leadership as it empowers team members, fosters collaboration, and enables leaders to focus on strategic tasks.

Development Plan To improve upon active listening, I plan to practice mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing and maintaining eye contact during conversations. I will also schedule regular check-ins with team members to actively listen to their concerns, ideas, and feedback. To enhance delegation skills, I will attend training sessions on effective delegation strategies and seek mentorship from experienced leaders who excel in this area. Additionally, I will gradually delegate tasks to team members, providing clear instructions and ongoing support.

Achieving Personal Vision To achieve my personal vision of creating a positive and inclusive work environment, I will lead by example and promote open communication. I will encourage collaboration among team members by facilitating brainstorming sessions and fostering a culture of trust and psychological safety. By recognizing and celebrating individual and team achievements, I will foster a sense of belonging and motivation within the organization.

Conclusion

Developing a personal leadership philosophy is crucial for effective leadership. By reflecting on our core values, mission, vision, strengths, and areas for improvement, we can cultivate our leadership skills and positively impact our teams. Through continuous self-improvement and aligning our be
