Despite studies establishing the value of lung-protective ventilation in managing patients with ALI/ARDS, controversy persists about the “best” way to achieve this while supporting oxygenation. Although the target delivered tidal volume and optimal static airway pressure are less contentious issues than in the past, there are still numerous options in providing ventilatory support, with conflicting evidence and strongly held opinions on the part of many clinicians.
Research current standards as well as strategies currently receiving attention as possible optimal options in the management of this patient population. Utilize this research to determine what you believe is the optimal method for ventilation of this patient population.
