Community Focus Group on Obesity in Adults
Group Definition and Setting:
The focus group consists of adults aged 18-65 residing in a suburban community.
Sample Size: Select a diverse group of 10-15 participants, representing different genders, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and educational levels.
Homogeneity: Ensure participants have a common characteristic related to the health problem, such as being overweight or having a high body mass index (BMI).
Opening Question:
“What are your perceptions of the health risks associated with obesity?”
This question aims to explore participants’ understanding and awareness of the potential health consequences of obesity. It encourages them to share their knowledge and beliefs about conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, joint problems, and mental health issues that are commonly associated with obesity.
Question about External Influences:
“What external factors do you believe contribute to the development and maintenance of obesity in our community?”
This question seeks to explore participants’ beliefs and perceptions about external influences on obesity. It encourages them to discuss environmental factors (e.g., access to healthy food, availability of physical activity resources), societal norms, cultural influences, and marketing practices that may impact individuals’ weight status.
Question about Roles in Improving the Health Problem:
“What do you think are the roles of individuals, healthcare professionals, and the community in addressing and improving the issue of obesity?”
This question aims to understand participants’ perceptions of the different roles and responsibilities in addressing obesity. It encourages discussion about personal accountability, the role of healthcare providers in providing education and support, and the importance of community engagement through initiatives such as promoting healthy food options or creating safe spaces for physical activity.
By using these questions, the focus group can gather insights into participants’ knowledge, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors related to obesity. This information will help inform strategies for health promotion interventions tailored to the community’s needs and perceptions.
