Cinderella paper assignment
After reading the Perrault & Grimm versions of “Cinderella,” as well as “The Cinder Maid” and
the two poems, you should have a good understanding of the basic elements of a Cinderella story. And
after reading about Professor Angela Duckworth’s concept of “Grit,” you have had a chance to reflect on
the elements of grit in your own life.
Now it’s time to bring both of those concepts to bear in your research paper. What are the
challenges you face in achieving your own “happily ever after”? More specifically, how will government
policies on education, on financial aid and on immigration help or hinder you in your educational
progress?
You MUST use at least one research source for this paper, and you MUST include at least one
direction quotation (with quotation marks and attribution) and one paraphrase—the ideas you learned
from your source put into your own words, along with attribution.
You should have an introduction which uses one of the following academic strategies:
• Begin with a quotation
• Begin with a statement recognizing an opinion or approach different from the one
you plan to take in your essay (for example, “Though most people might believe X, I
hope to prove Y”).
• Begin with a paradox, a seeming self-contradiction.
• Begin with a short anecdote or narrative
• Begin with an interesting fact or statistic
• Begin with a question or several questions that will be answered in the paper
• Begin with relevant background material
• Begin with an analogy
• Begin with a definition of a term that is important to your essay
