Sociological Theory

Respond to the following prompt in no less than 300-400 words. In your response, you must fully answer all aspects of the question and support your answer with reference to course materials (textbook, supplementary readings, videos, etc).

Pick one of the sociological theories you’ve learned about in this unit. What are its core assumptions about how society and social life work? What are its strengths? its weaknesses? What makes it different from other theories you’ve learned about?

oTHER INFORMATION

Social Theory
It might surprise you to learn that sociologists do not have a single, unified theory of human society. In fact, they very often don’t agree with each other! Sociology has at least three major theoretical perspectives that act as lenses through which to view social life – and a lot smaller, more specific theories for various topics of sociological interest. As you learn about these theories, don’t feel compelled to choose between them; rather, think about how they each show us different things.

Theoretical model

Select and revise one research question. Outline your proposed innovative intervention (individual or community oriented) and a theoretical model that supports it. How will answering your research question contribute to the midwifery model of care? What theoretical model supports your proposed intervention? Create your own conceptual model that depicts how your intervention works. How does your research question address health disparities, social justice, person-centered care, and cultural humility? (2-3 pages)

  1. Research question including PICO elements

(This is my research question, “What situations or conditions can increase the chance of male continued perpetration of physical violence against their intimate partners?”)

Fleming, P. J., McCleary-Sills, J., Morton, M., Levtov, R., Heilman, B. & Barker, G. (2015). Risk factors for men’s lifetime perpetration of physical violence against intimate partners: results from the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES) in eight countries. PLoS one, 14(10), e0223695. doi: 10.1371/journal.pone.0118639

  1. Outline proposed innovative intervention (individual or community oriented). Choose a theory that support your intervention and explain why it supports the intervention.

(Social Cognitive Theory, Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, Mercer’s Becoming a Mother, or Leininger’s Transcultural Nursing Theory)

  1. History of theory(who developed, what was the intention, concepts/constructs within the theory, etc.)
  2. Contribution of research question to midwifery model of care
  3. Discussion of how research question addresses health disparities, social justice, person-centered care, and cultural humility.
  4. Present your own conceptual model that depicts how your intervention works. Include visual representation and brief narrative.

Corporate Social Responsibility model

“In 2016, Elon Musk Space X and Tesla CEO founded the neural tech company called “Neuralink”. In 2019, Musk showed off what he called “the link,” as a fifty cent piece sized disk which compresses information flowing from the brain and wirelessly transmits the signals. A chip connected to the human brain, capable of both recording and stimulating the brain activity. Musk has said that Neuralink will broadcast a live demo of a “working device”. in the future, Neuralink allows us to record and download human memories on computer. The technology could also be used for people with neural conditions and illnesses.
While the Neuralink technology potentially offers everything from human memory recording to thought control of external devices, there are serious of ethical and legal consequences for the Neuralink technology. Once this technology reaches maturity, our way of life would undergo a revolution in areas such as:
1/Learners can “go to school” by allowing the interface to direct experiences and thoughts into consciousness – instead physical feeds.
2/ a new profession would arise when mind-workers can “lease” their “mind hour” to institutions with low-cost training.
3/ once programs and systems develop to interface with large number of mind-workers, this would become a new way of recruitment.
4/ Human resources would demand a premium. Instead of technology replacing human labour. 5/ Mind-based communication would become possible, and it would open doors to new type of communications that reduce conflict and struggle in workplace.
6/ Feelings and thoughts would become commodities for exchange and purchase, leading to new media and entertainment industries (instead of social media).
7/Increase work-life balance, the standard of living and overall happiness. Because of artificial intelligence people will have more time to enjoy being human beings”.
According to the above discussion, the entrepreneur has frequently been vocal about Musk’s worries that Neuralink technology could one day dominate the human race.
Q1. Apply basic assumptions of the business ethics theories of “Utilitarianism”, “Deontology”, and “Social Justice” to judge the ethicality of Neuralink technology. (30 marks)
Q2. Discuss the ethicality of the Neuralink technology through applying the ethical decision steps. (40 marks)
Q3. Apply the Corporate Social Responsibility model to suggest ways in which Neuralink Company can meet its social responsibilities. (30 marks)

International trade and Investment

• Answer ALL questions in Part B.
• Please show all workings. Round your answers to two decimal places.
• Fully label your graphs, if you are required to draw one.
• Questions in Part B carry marks as indicated.
B1. (24 marks)
Suppose that fixed costs for a firm in the air-conditioning manufacturing industry (start-up costs of factories, automation chain, etc.) are $6.9 billion, and that
variable costs are $15,000 per finished air- con. Suppose that the air-con market is monopolistically competitive, and firms are identical. More firms increase
competition, and so the market price falls as more firms enter the market, making the market price to be = 15,000 + 200/ , where represents the number of
firms in the market. Assume that there are three countries in the world: Ascalonia, Bretonnia, and Carlia, with the market size being 400 million, 550 million,
and 200 million, respectively.
a. (2 marks) Calculate the equilibrium number of firms in Ascalonia air-con markets in autarky.
b. (2 marks) What is the equilibrium price of automobiles in Ascalonia if there is no international trade?
c. (7 marks) Now suppose that the three countries join to form a free trade area, and assume no transportation costs. How many firms will there be in the
combined market? What will be the new equilibrium price, and average cost for each air-con?
d. (7 marks) Suppose instead that a revolution now closed Carlia off from the rest of the world, so that the free trade area now only consists of Ascalonia and
Bretonnia. Calculate the number of firms, the equilibrium price, and average cost for each air-con in this combined market.
e. (6 marks) Compare the number of firms, and the price that Ascalonian consumers pay for each air- con between the scenarios in (b), (c) and (d). In which
scenario would Ascalonian consumers benefit the most, and explain why.
B2. (24 marks)
Suppose there are three countries in the world: Australia, New Zealand, and Vietnam. Australia’s domestic demand for headphone follows
= 100 −
while its domestic supply of headphone follows
= 0.4 − 4
where , refer to Quantities Demanded and Supplied in Australia at the domestic price , respectively. The unit cost of headphone production in Vietnam is $30,
while it is $40 in New Zealand. Currently, there is a 100% tariff on headphone imports into Australia.
a. (4 marks) What is the price of headphone in Australia? How many headphones will Australia import, and how much tariff revenue will the Australian
government collect?
Suppose now that Australia signs a free trade agreement (FTA) with New Zealand.
b. (4 marks) How many headphones will Australia import, and from which country?
c. (4 marks) Is this the case of trade creation or trade diversion as a result of Australia forming an FTA with New Zealand? Explain why.
d. (6 marks) Calculate the amount of trade diversion loss/trade creation gain from the Australia-New Zealand FTA.
e. (6 marks) Calculate the total welfare gain/loss to Australia as a result of the Australia-New Zealand FTA.
B3. (12 marks)
a. (4 marks) Explain, using the gravity model of trade, why the volume of trade between the U.S and the European Union may be higher than the volume of
trade between the U.S. and Canada, even though the U.S. and Canada share a border.
b. (4 marks) According to the Heckscher-Ohlin model, free trade would lead to an equalization of wage rate internationally. Explain why we do not observe
that result in the real world, where, for instance, there is great discrepancy in wage rate between developed and developing countries.
c. (4 marks) Why do countries persist in using protectionism even though most economists believe that tariffs and quotas yield welfare losses to
consumers?

Authors Influenced By Events And People

To what extent do these influences become part of their work and how authors communicate their feelings/beliefs about the world around them? How is the authors writing an analysis of the social, economic, and cultural values of that time period. How is it a reflection and how is it a criticism? how does a writer make opinions about that world clear to the reader.

Evidenced-based theory

This course continues to focus on evidenced-based theory and research related to acute illnesses in the adult-gerontological population in the acute care setting. Learners build on prior knowledge and synthesize data from a variety of health resources related to the care of the acutely ill patient. Utilizing a systems framework, learners further develop clinical judgment and decision-making skills in order to recommend treatments for alterations in different systems as they develop an evidence-based plan of care. Clinical practice affords learners the opportunity to refine their clinical decision-making skills in advanced health assessment, clinical diagnosis, procedural skill acquisition, and care management of acute and chronically ill adult-gerontological patients. Practicum experiences emphasize the physiological and psychosocial impact of acute and critical illness on patients, family, and community.

Reflect on the course objectives, clinical practice guidelines, the three to five clinical objectives, and your plan to incorporate clinical practice guidelines for your clinical experience

In 500 words, summarize the objectives you met during your clinical experience and discuss your incorporation of the course objectives and clinical practice guidelines. Provide specific examples to justify and illustrate your experiences.
