Social movements

Select a social movement. It may be contemporary, historical; local or large-scale; from the United States or abroad. Examples could include a labor strike, abolitionists opposing slavery, the women’s right to vote movement, or Occupy Wall Street. This is wide open. Pick something that interests you, or perhaps you or someone in your family or in your ancestry may have been involved with.

Early in the week, share which movement you will be researching so we can cover a variety of movements. You will be able to see your classmates’ selections so there won’t be duplication. Your initial post serves as a placeholder to claim the movement you will investigate.

Do some research to see what you can uncover about the social movement you selected. In particular, see if you can find anything from the time it was occurring: news articles or video footage.

Identify:

the issue that spurred the movement
any leaders of the movement you can find and their background
the timetable in which it occurred
perceptions of it. If you were alive during the movement, what was your perception of it? If you weren’t and can find someone who was, ask them for their perspective. If you have selected something historical, how does history view the movement?
Finally, was the movement successful? What changed as a result of it?

Immigrant Population

a. Define the main characteristics of its population.

b. Identify factors that influence whether this population is considered marginalized/discriminated/oppressed today.

c. Seek social policies (federal, state or local) related to that population.

d. Analyze elements that still require attention by government bodies (You can give your personal suggestion).

Social Policy Analysis Framework

Coleman, R. (2022, Jan 12). Social policy analysis framework [Video]. YouTube. https://youtu.be/aSpng5EGQlg?t=59

Your Assignment
Identify a known anti-oppression policy such as affirmative action, social security law, food stamp program, child, and family assistance program, etc. Trace its history and development and identify whether it meets the criteria listed in this week’s lecture. If you were an advisor to the committee looking to revise it, what would you recommend?

Theoretical framework

Select the specific theoretical framework that you will use with your project (education, leadership or FNP). Describe how the theory that you chose aligns with your capstone project. Include the following information:

Describe the key features of the selected theoretical framework/model. What are its major components?

Identify specific research approaches appropriate for use with the theoretical model or framework and how it fits with your intended project.
Does the model lend itself to quantitative or qualitative methods or both?
What kind of quantitative/qualitative methods would be most appropriate? (Focus groups, interviews, pre/post-tests, record review, survey, etc.)
Describe how the theoretical framework might be used to evaluate the program/project and critique how well the model fits the program or project.
What aspects of the model works well and what aspects do not?
Why?

A logic model or program theory

A logic model or program theory is a description or model frequently pictorial of how a program is supposed to achieve its expected outcomes and solve the identified problem for which it was created. It creates a logical links between expected outcomes and the activities designed to achieve them and incorporates the evidence-based theoretical assumptions that explain how the activities will lead to outcomes. A program theory or logic model is NOT the theoretical framework on which your project is based although it may be related to a theoretical framework. A theoretical or conceptual framework is a general theory that explains why some things happen. A program theory or logic model is unique to your project and explains how it is supposed to work.

Assignment Prompt

Develop a one-page diagram of theoretical foundation for your project/program, describing how and why your project should achieve the desired outcome. Add references on the second page. You may arrange items in the diagram in any way you choose, but the diagrams should include each of the following components and show the logical connections between them:
The need or problem to be addressed by the project/program with supporting data
The context for the project/program (attach a reference list with your diagram)
The strategy (ies) proposed to address the need/problem
The evidence base for the proposed strategies (attached a reference list with your diagram)
Factors that will influence the use of strategy
The expected outcomes of the project/program
The resulting impact of the project/program if the outcomes are achieved.
