Riegelman and Kirkwood (2019) point out that noncommunicable diseases represent the majority of causes of death and disability in developed countries. However, for quite some time mental health conditions/disorders were not treated as major public health issues when compared with their physical/medical health counterparts (i.e. heart disease, cancer, diabetes…etc.) despite their impact on one’s overall health.
For this week’s discussion board:
Discuss a mental health condition (i.e. major depressive disorder, schizophrenia, alcohol use disorder..PICK ONE.etc.) and its burden as a noncommunicable disease in terms of short-term/chronic disability and morbidity. Consider its epidemiological transition and how it progresses.
Considering the preventative, curative, and rehabilitative approaches to that mental health condition, discuss a POPULATION HEALTH STRATEGY that includes the following (you can include current available strategies to expand upon, as well as, your own ideas):
screening for early detection and treatment of disease (also, include when and where these can be performed)
multiple risk factor interventions
identification of cost-effective interventions
genetic counseling and interventions
research
Social workers are the largest group of mental health providers within the United States when compared with the number of psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors…etc.). Lastly, discuss how social workers would help implement your population health strategy and improve/reduce the mental health condition and its’ impact on society.

Cry from the diary of a Metis Child
Write assessment and care plan based on a case scenario presented in class (Richard Cardinal: Cry from the diary of a Metis Child). Students will choose a point in time in Richard’s life while he was living in foster care to create this plan in relation to. Students will use this space to incorporate their own critical reflection of the case presented in class while completing a written assessment and case plan for intervention using input gathered from the case scenario.
The assessment and case planning assignment will be written in 15-20 pages and will include:
– A family systems overview, such as a genogram, detailing family history, strengths, and areas of growth (2-4 pages)
– Care plan domains (7-10 pages), including an overview of and recommendations towards strengthening Richard’s:
o permanency (physical, legal, relational and cultural)
o identity
o health (physical, mental, spiritual)
o behavioural development
o education
o social/relational activities
o self-care and independence skills
Care plans should assess and address each domain and provide tangible recommendations to strengthen each of these domains over a specific period of time.
– Analysis of intersectionality’s from critically reflexive space (5-10 pages), students will reflect on their experience of creating this plan and reflect on learnings from this course. This is a space to capture the strengths and utilities of creating such a plan as well as to consider the shortcomings of planning using such a tool.
The assessment assignment requires critical reflection of the engagement and assessment process as well as the factors influencing the case. Drafts of the assignment will be required to support student learning and engagement.
This assignment will offer students the opportunity to examine their own practice as well as build upon their documentation, critical reflection, and relational skills. This assignment will be written in 5-6 pages using APA 7 formatting.

Defensive Communication
According to Zastrow and Hessenauer (2019), our perceptions determine how we interpret the messages we receive during communication. There are
several factors that can affect our perception, including defense mechanisms, which are socio-psychological factors that can influence what we perceive
and, in many cases, derail effective communication.
Before you write your initial discussion post, you should first review Chapter 5, Sections 2 and 3 in the textbook and review the defense mechanisms video.
For this forum, consider the following examples of defensiveness. Pick two of these examples and identify the defense mechanism at work, explain your
reasoning, then use Gibb’s analysis of defensive communication to explain how the defensiveness might be overcome.
A spouse refuses to speak to their partner because the partner was late for dinner and did not call.
A student tells their professor that it is the professor’s “fault” that they are on academic probation, which will “ruin their life.”
A parent tells her teen not to binge drink and the teen yells, “Who are you to judge me? You did the same thing when you were my age!”
An employer tells a recent college graduate that they know more because they went to the “school of hard knocks,” and “you think you’re better than the rest
of us—well, I’ve got news for you—you’re not! I’ve forgotten more than you will ever know about this business!”
A client in treatment for alcohol dependence tells the therapist that they got drunk because they were at a party and they “had to drink to fit in.” The client
goes on to say, “One or two drinks isn’t going to kill me, so stop overreacting!!”
Your initial post should be at least 200 words, and you should provide a complete reference for each source you cited.
History of the cultural group
Select a cultural group (not discussed in class) and using course readings and four additional peer-reviewed journal articles to support your responses. This paper should be in APA 7 format.
1. Discuss the history of the cultural group in the United States.
2. What are some of the difficulties experienced in this cultural group?
3. What types of clinical interventions are appropriate for this cultural group?
4. How would you address your own bias when working with this group?
5. Use the language in the nasw cultural competencies when working with the ethnic group. Go over each cultural comptency and use the language and apply it to when working with the cutlural group that you choose. Use the nasw cultural competence link below to answer this question:

Personal and Professional Development Plan
Personal and Professional Development Plan: The objective of this activity is to intentionally & personally reflect on one’s sense of calling or vocation and on how one develops over the life course in their chosen or given role. You are not required to conduct additional reading for this paper, but you can cite textbooks as sources for your paper. Also you must cite source(s) for the theories that are used in the discussion of your developmental process.
The paper must be 4-7 pages in length (not including the title and reference pages), in APA format. The paper should minimally include discussion of the following:
● What is a “calling or vocation?”
● How does one come to an understanding or awareness of their “calling or vocation?”
● In what ways does the profession of social work relate to your sense of “calling or vocation.”
● Where are you in your understanding of “calling or vocation”? Discuss the process of arriving at this developmental stage using developmental theories taught in the SW program (e.g. Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development, Marcia’s theory of identity formation, and/or Fowler’s theory of faith development).
● A “call or vocation,” as well as a professional identity, evolves across the life course. How do you imagine or hope your personal and professional identity will evolve? Include a discussion of personal and professional life-goals.
● In what ways will you intentionally plan or cultivate your “call or vocation,” i.e., what steps will you take or plans will you make to more fully develop your personal and professional sense of self?
● What are essential values, principles and/or commitments that you have and expect will continue to shape and guide your personal and professional formation? How will you continue to engage in career-long learning?
Social Work Case Studies media and navigate to Talia.
As you explore Talia’s case, imagine that you are her social worker, and consider how you might apply the concept of resiliency to her case. Also think about how you might apply the concept to social work practice in general.
Deviance as Innovation in Music, Movies & Television
Consider legal innovation within the world of music, movies, and television. In the making of popular music, movies, and television there is definitely a norm in terms of how the final product should sound, look, or feel. However, some artists take risks and push the boundaries of those accepted/expected norms.
Instructions:
Choose a specific song, movie, or television show, that you think breaks with the typical norm within its genre (or subgenre). For example, you might choose a particular Hip Hop song that you think breaks the typical mold of what is expected for songs of its kind, in terms of instrumentation/beats or lyrics or theme. Or choose a movie or TV that has characters or ways of storytelling that defy the norm. Perhaps it simply discusses a topic that is taboo. If you select a song, you may also choose to discuss its music video.
Your paper should include, in no particular order:
- The name of the song, movie, or television show. Include any other information that might be relevant, such as the artist, director, actor, etc.
- A description of the expected norm for this medium or genre.
- A description of how the song/show/movie you chose innovates, and thus breaks with this norm. Be detailed and thorough, however try to avoid a complete description of the plot, lyrics, or video.
- Your thoughts about the risks you think the artist took and whether those risks paid off. In other words, do you think this act of innovation affected the world in any way (e.g. the genre it belongs to, or the viewing/listening audience).
Crisis intervention and the provision of mental health services
Part 1 – Assignment:
In your opinion how did the introduction of psychotropic medication and the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill influence the current state of crisis intervention and the provision of mental health services?
Part 2 – Essay Assignment:
Review the following case scenario:
John and Louise have been married for nine years. They have three children ages 8, 7, and 5. John is 29 and Louise is 28. John works full time to support the family. Louise is a stay-at-home mother who sometimes babysits the neighborhood children to supplement the income. The family is actively involved in their religion. This is both John and Louise’s first marriage.
John discloses to Louise that he has been questioning his life lately. John reports that on business trips he has started drinking, which is against church law, and is using tobacco and illicit drugs on occasion. John is not sure that he wants to remain a member of the church and is uncertain that he wants to remain married. Louise, still very active, asks that they meet with a church leader to discuss. John is excommunicated from the church. Louise and John decide that they can no longer remain married. The couple discloses the situation to their children, who are unaware of any marital conflict. John moves out for a month, moves back in to try to make it work, and then moves out again with no further discussion with the children.
Louise, now responsible for the livelihood of herself and her three children, determines that she needs to find full-time employment and return to finish her college education. Groceries and financial assistance are sought through the church. Childcare is now needed for the children when Louise is at work/night school. Louise is having trouble sleeping and is always on edge. The children are beginning to show symptoms of emotional and behavioral distress.
Write an essay describing the following:
• Identify the person/people in crisis.
• When and why did this become a crisis?
• Describe what your personal response would be to this crisis if you were assigned to the case as a crisis worker.
• Apply the helpful characteristics of a crisis counselor that you possess to how you would intervene.
• Describe any characteristics that you would need to develop in working on this case and why this would be important.
