Crisis intervention and the provision of mental health services

Part 1 – Assignment:
In your opinion how did the introduction of psychotropic medication and the deinstitutionalization of the mentally ill influence the current state of crisis intervention and the provision of mental health services?
Part 2 – Essay Assignment:
Review the following case scenario:
John and Louise have been married for nine years. They have three children ages 8, 7, and 5. John is 29 and Louise is 28. John works full time to support the family. Louise is a stay-at-home mother who sometimes babysits the neighborhood children to supplement the income. The family is actively involved in their religion. This is both John and Louise’s first marriage.
John discloses to Louise that he has been questioning his life lately. John reports that on business trips he has started drinking, which is against church law, and is using tobacco and illicit drugs on occasion. John is not sure that he wants to remain a member of the church and is uncertain that he wants to remain married. Louise, still very active, asks that they meet with a church leader to discuss. John is excommunicated from the church. Louise and John decide that they can no longer remain married. The couple discloses the situation to their children, who are unaware of any marital conflict. John moves out for a month, moves back in to try to make it work, and then moves out again with no further discussion with the children.
Louise, now responsible for the livelihood of herself and her three children, determines that she needs to find full-time employment and return to finish her college education. Groceries and financial assistance are sought through the church. Childcare is now needed for the children when Louise is at work/night school. Louise is having trouble sleeping and is always on edge. The children are beginning to show symptoms of emotional and behavioral distress.
Write an essay describing the following:
• Identify the person/people in crisis.
• When and why did this become a crisis?
• Describe what your personal response would be to this crisis if you were assigned to the case as a crisis worker.
• Apply the helpful characteristics of a crisis counselor that you possess to how you would intervene.
• Describe any characteristics that you would need to develop in working on this case and why this would be important.

The Poulin and Rong

Review the Poulin and Rong article. How would you classify it on the following dimensions:
1. Given the discussion of the importance of a critical review, evaluate the effectiveness of the literature review in the Poulin and Rong (2012) study. How did the literature review help focus the research question in this study?
2. Does this study use inductive or deductive thinking?
2. Which of the 4 study purposes drive this study?
3. Is the study qualitative, quantitative or mixed?
4. How would you assess the validity of the study according to the dimensions listed above?

Power has three different “faces”.

Stephan Lukes argues that power has three different “faces”. Another (I think better) way to think about this idea is that Lukes is saying that power can be wielded in three different dimensions, ranging from overt and clear deployment of power in the first dimension, to more covert deployments of power in the 2nd and 3rd dimensions. Two questions:
1.) What is the difference between the first and second dimensions of power? Can you think of an example of each dimension? Looking at these examples, can you say what it is that distinguishes 2nd D from 1st D?
2.) Last semester we talked about how “stringency of eligibility” (the measure of how social welfare programs’/policy’s selection criteria, rules and regulations influences different individual’s and group’s access to the program’s benefits) was an important social justice issue for social workers in particular. How is this relevant to Luke’s discussion of the second dimension of power?
3.) What is the difference between the second and third dimensions of power? Can you think of an example of each dimension? Looking at these examples, can you say what it is that distinguishes 3rd D from 2nd D?
4.) Lukes and also Gaventa refer to the notion of “false consciousness”. This is a concept, borrowed from Marxist Class Analysis, that focuses on how poor, oppressed and marginalized people can sometimes identify with interests of the classes and groups that oppress them.
A. To which of Lukes’ three faces of power does this concept correspond?
B.) What do think about the concept of False Consciousness? Lets keep in mind that the term is used by many different commentators, scholars and advocates for various reasons.
C.) What does it suggest about the agency and even basic mental capacity of poor and oppressed persons? Why is this issue potentially problematic for advocates interested in advancing the authentic voices of poor, marginalized and oppressed communities in the claims making process?

Maintain legal and ethical compliance

Section 3A: Knowledge Activity
1. List seven (7) areas in the workplace, which may be governed by Organisational policies and procedures.
2. List five (5) areas of work practices in ethical codes of conduct or codes of ethics that staff must comply with.
3. List five (5) specific sources of legal and ethical information that you can refer to, in order to learn what your compliance requirements are. (For example: name specific legislation Acts or Service Standards etc.)
4. List three (3) responsibilities that regulatory authorities have.
5. List five (5) ways, you can share up to date knowledge and information with your organisation, colleagues, other community services or clients.
6. List ‘the seven C’s’ in accordance with which you should write organisational policies and procedures.
7. List three (3) formatting requirements for policies and procedures.
8. Identify three (3) ways of monitoring compliance in the workplace.
Section 3B: Performance Activity
1. Identify the legal standards and ethical responsibilities that apply to a community services organisation of your choice. Demonstrate your ability to use the relevant information sources and interpret information relevant to a community services area of work.
Write down all of the legal and ethical requirements that you identify – you may like to reference or attach any relevant documents.
2. Read the scenario and answer questions a and b.
Scenario:
You are employed by a Community Service organisation that is funded under the Department of Social Services (Disability and Carers). The organisation needs to meet the National Standards for Disability Services to maintain their accreditation.
Department of Social Services – Disability and Carers
Since working for the organisation you have not had any training apart from a one-day induction. There was an incident in the workplace and you were unable to find the policies and procedures that explained what to do and the ones that you did find have not been updated for several years. You have not been able to attend team meetings as you are either rostered on shift or they are held on your days off. You are not provided the minutes of the meetings – you are unsure if minutes are taken.
One of the people that you provide support to, who is over the age of 18 years old, is being put in their room with the door shut (the person is unable to open the door).
You were asked by your team manager to do an audit on the residential house that you work in, you are aware that it is the person’s home foremost. When doing the review and completing the audit documentation, you identify there are several things that need fixing and that the emergency fire equipment has not been tested for some time.
https://www.dss.gov.au/our-responsibilities/disability-and-carers/standards-and-quality-assurance/national-standards-for-disability-services
You submitted your audit report and it has taken over 6 months for the items to be fixed and you are are still waiting for the fire extinguishers to be checked. You have talked to your team manager on several occasions about the audit and your report.
To answer this question, access and read the following documents (located on Supplementary Resources or perform internet research):
• National Standards for Disability Services
• Restrictive Practice

a) You are required to answer the following questions, by recording your answers in the table below.
• identify all areas of non-compliance that are occurring within this organisation (in scenario)
• For each non-compliance, suggest a modification to the organisation’s work practices, to ensure they maintain their accreditation (as outlined in the National Standards for Disability Services)
b) Identify who should be contacted about the non-compliance breaches in this organisation. Additionally, identify how work practices can be reviewed and monitored for improvement.
3. Regulatory Bodies are responsible for establishing and maintaining quality standards in the industry. Identify two (2) Regulatory Bodies that have the responsibility for assessing and monitoring the legal and ethical compliance of community services organisations.
For each regulatory body you identify, provide details of their function and operating procedures (the framework and process). Also include information on the types of accreditations and certifications that they offer.

Psychoeducation group for families

Design an 8-week psychoeducation group for families impacted by substance use. This can be in a variety of settings but must include family members. Be creative; this is something you may be asked to do in your internship.
You will provide an outline of the group sessions (6-8) via word document or slide deck, and each session must include but not limited to:
The topic
The goal/object
The activity
Education process – discussion questions, videos clips, worksheets, your own presentation
Homework/resources for the family members
Include the links, pdfs, conversation questions, etc. With the information provided, the group facilitator should be able to pick up your guide and implement the session.
Think of this like making a lesson plan. It is an outline of what you will be educating the family on in the group. Maybe start by picking out group topics/themes. Use your reading materials to help you determine what themes families experience.
