My Filter Bubble

Overview:
In this assignment, you will apply Eli Pariser’s concept of the filter bubble to your own social media and internet use. Then you will analyze the possible differences in search items among several individuals.
Instructions:
For this assignment, you will need the help of two individuals who are willing to let you observe their social media newsfeed and internet search. The two individuals should be as diverse as possible. For example, if you are a 35 year old woman, try to choose two individuals who differ from you in age, gender, political stance, occupation, or interests. Write a brief paragraph about each individual (including you) that describes basic characteristics and demographic information. Include some of the characteristics listed above.

  1. First, conduct an internet search on a controversial and current topic. For example, search any trending topic you find on yahoo or social media platform. Be sure you are searching from your own personal computer or device. Take a screen shot of the first page of search results. Ask two other individuals to search the same term from their own device and send you a screen shot of the first page of results. Include the three screen shots with your submitted assignment.
  2. Review each of the three screen shots. Describe the differences and similarities in items that were included. Analyze the results as they relate to the individual who searched them. What are some reasons each particular individual got those specific search results? What connections can you make between the individual’s characteristics/demographic information and their specific search results?
  3. Summarize how the filter bubble impacts your worldview and what information you have access to. Create a short list of ways to pop your filter bubble. What can be done to diversify the information you see on the internet and social media platforms?

Social Media and the Self

Recent research suggests that narcissism has been increasing among college students in recent years. Search social media sites such as Facebook,
Instagram, and Twitter and look for evidence of narcissistic posts. This is not a controlled experiment, of course, but do you see evidence of narcissism on
these sites? What about signs of caring for and empathy toward others—did you find evidence for these traits as well? Do your findings support those of the
Twenge (2013) article you read?
